“Two nights ago, I saw you walking into a hotel with another guy. Alfred was looking for you that night, so I sent him the photos.”
Zoey said it like it was some innocent little update, but the implication couldn’t have been clearer.
She wanted the whole world to think Nella had cheated on Alfred. That she’d snuck off to a
hotel with another man behind his back.
Nella frowned.
She had nothing to hide. But there was no controlling a snake like Zoey, who had no shame smearing her with filth.
And now she was dragging Wesley into it too.
Zoey saw Nella’s face change and thought she’d landed the hit. Her lips curled into a smug little
smile.
The crowd had gotten bigger. More eyes. More whispers. And she looked even more pleased with herself.
She kept that pitiful voice going as she blinked up at Nella. “I didn’t mean to tattle or anything. I just saw how worried Alfred was, and I thought he should know where you were. I never expected him to get so mad or take it out on my family.”
Then she suddenly grabbed Nella’s arm and started crying.
“Nella, I know you hurt Alfred. But he still cares about you. He always listens to you. Please, talk to him for me. Tell him to stop going after my dad. My dad worked so hard for that company. I don’t want everything to fall apart just because of you!”
Nella stared at her in silence.
Zoey’s tear-streaked performance was so dramatic she almost laughed.
What the hell was this girl thinking?
She dumped that kind of accusation in front of a crowd and then expected her to go beg Alfred for mercy on her behalf?
But now that she thought about it, since when did Alfred get so cruel that he’d tear down his childhood crush’s entire family business without blinking?

“Patrick’s really got it rough.”
:
Nella muttered that like she was talking to herself.
The words hit so unexpectedly that Zoey nearly choked on her act. She blinked, thrown completely off script.
Why the hell was Nella bringing up Patrick right now?

“What a mess. You bribed a nurse, nearly got him killed, dragged his name through the mud, and now because of you, his whole family’s about to lose everything.”
Nella suddenly felt like she and Patrick had something in common.
They were both just pawns in Zoey and Alfred’s little game.
She had already died once and crawled her way out of it. She wondered if Patrick would get same chance.
Zoey didn’t know how to respond. She stared at Nella like she’d grown two heads.

Then a few murmurs started floating from the crowd. “So it really was her fault Patrick almost died? She’s insane. She tried to frame Nella and almost got her own brother killed?”
