Chapter 409 Protecting Nella

The darkness kept her from seeing anything around them, but she knew that both of them were in serious danger.

Rocks kept falling, pounding down relentlessly, yet the space Alfred was holding didn’t move an inch.

Nella didn’t know what to say at that moment, so all she could do was whisper, “Thank you.”

Alfred understood her.

His voice trembled, carrying a faint note of weakness, as he said to her, “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just… trying to make up for the stupid thing I did before.”

He was talking about the avalanche, the time he had left her behind.

Nella didn’t actually care that he had left her alone. After all, no one could have predicted the avalanche.

What really bothered her was that he did nothing while she was trapped under the snow, even suspecting that she was faking it just to call him back.

Later, when she found out that the reply had been from Zoey, the frustration she’d held onto finally faded.

Besides, they had signed a contract. They weren’t bound by feelings. Alfred didn’t owe her anything.

So now, Nella felt there was no need for him to try to make up for it.

After all, even back during the avalanche, even if Alfred had been by her side, he had no obligation to risk his life for hers.

And now, the two of them weren’t even counted as husband and wife.

“Alfred, you don’t owe me anything,” Nella said quietly and slowly.

In the darkness, Alfred nodded slightly. “A-alright, I don’t owe you. I’m just … helping because… I want to.”

His voice trembled badly. Even though he finished the sentence, Nella could still feel that his energy weakened slightly.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Her hand tightened a little around his arm. “Are you hurt?”

“No.”

After he spoke, a drop of liquid fell on Nella’s face-warm, not like sweat, slightly sticky.

“Maybe… the air here is too thin. Talking talking’s hard,” he said.

More drops fell on her face.

She reached out. The familiar iron-rust smell made her heart jolt hard.

“Don’t lie to me. You’re hurt,” she said.

Her voice was calm, almost clinical, like she was talking to an injured patient.

Alfred, stop holding yourself up.”

Nella wanted him to let go, but for some reason, Alfred managed to keep his arms pressed to the ground like pillars, utterly still.

The harder he held, the faster the blood flowed.

She couldn’t see exactly where he was hurt, but judging by the direction of the drops, it seemed like his head was injured.

She remembered the muffled sound when Alfred had rushed over, and her heart trembled even more.

“Alfred, your head… Is it hurt?”
