Hanley looked excitedly at Liana and Lucas, who were still working on the challenge. "You've already lost!" he declared. "There's no point in struggling anymore. Today's winner is me!"
The headmistress gently chided him, "Hanley, even if you've finished, you can't disturb the other contestants."
"I'm not trying to disturb them. I'm just letting them know they're wasting their time. The winner is me."
Just then, Liana finished second, and Lucas finished third. Hanley's taunts hadn't affected them at all.
Natalie watched them, thoroughly pleased. Even though they weren't first, they hadn't been distracted and had remained focused on completing the challenge.
"Now that we have three finishers, let's wait a moment for the other contestants."
During the pause, Hanley smugly looked at Lucas. "You lost to me. Get ready to bark like a dog."
"Hasn't anyone ever told you that celebrating at halftime is bad luck?"
Just then, Liana signed something to Lucas, whose face immediately lit up.
"Sister, is that true?"
Lucas grinned. "You're still so happy, but your fourth path on the left is wrong."
"You're lying! What do you know? I'm not wrong!"
Though his words were defiant, Hanley grew nervous. He stared at his solution on the screen. How could he possibly be wrong?
The headmistress announced, "The other contestants have now finished. Let's ask the representative from the Helios Institute for Advanced Minds to come up and verify the children's answers."
A representative from the institute walked onto the stage and began checking the first completed puzzle.
He said, "This contestant was the first to finish and was very fast. However, there is an error. The fourth path on the left is incorrect!"
