Daily? What was that supposed to mean? Did he think she wouldn’t even last a few days?
…
The Lockwood Estate.
“Natalie’s here! Daddy wasn’t lying! This is great!”
Lucas and Liana were overjoyed to see her step out of the car.
“Natalie, I was going to come find you!” Lucas exclaimed. “But Daddy said you were coming to work here. He was telling the truth!”
*He was so sure I’d accept,* Natalie thought. *But I guess it makes sense. I’m the ‘evil woman’ now. I wouldn’t find a job anywhere else.*
Natalie managed a small smile. “That’s right. From now on, I’ll be your tutor.”
“Yes! Natalie is our tutor! I’m so happy!”
Terence watched his son practically preening and chuckled. “She’s here to make you study. Are you sure you’re still happy about that?”
Looking at Lucas’s radiant smile, Natalie couldn’t help but think of Hanley. He never smiled like that. He was always so serious, so formal, a little old man in a child’s body.
“As long as Natalie is teaching, I’ll love it!” Lucas declared.
Terence still looked skeptical. “Natalie is here to be your sister’s tutor. I’m only paying for one. Don’t get any ideas about causing trouble.”
He explained that Lucas had systematically scared off every single one of Liana’s previous tutors. They would arrive for a lesson and leave to find the soles of their shoes mysteriously missing, or a small snake coiled inside their handbag, or any number of other bizarre and terrifying surprises.
Working for the Lockwoods was a high-risk, high-reward proposition.
Extinct? What did he mean? Natalie was confused.
Terence turned to her. “Are you afraid of small animals? This kid has a habit of putting things in people’s bags. Snakes, toads, mice… He seems to like you, so where others might get a single surprise, you might just get… a whole menagerie.”
Natalie’s eyes widened. This child was a menace. Then again, it sounded exactly like something he would do.
“Daddy, that was when I was young and foolish! I don’t do that stuff anymore.”
Liana started signing rapidly.
[Liana promises that brother won’t be naughty. Brother will be a good student, I know it!]
“See! My sister gets me!” Lucas said, pointing at Liana. “I won’t be naughty, I promise. With a teacher this great, of course I’ll love studying. Cross my heart!”

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
