“Timing is everything,” Ms. Marsh replied. “Besides, don’t you think Natalie’s love for math makes her a better match for my grandson? Their interests align. Your grandson loves car racing, which isn’t her thing. He might not succeed. I’m just providing us with a backup plan.”
Just then, someone shouted, “Look, it’s Patrick Mercer!”
Patrick walked over and said politely, “Grandma, I’m back.”
He had been dedicated to his scientific research for several years and hadn’t been home. His work was classified, so while people knew his name, they knew nothing of his background.
“I can’t believe he’s your grandson. I’d never heard that before.”
“My grandson was on loan to the country. But thankfully, his project is complete, so he can come home now,” Rebecca said proudly, then suddenly remembered something important.
“Patrick, that woman stole Natalie’s honor. Why didn’t you expose her on the spot? Don’t you have evidence? If not, I can provide it.”
As the former head of the intelligence organization the Umbra Network, Rebecca could get that kind of evidence in minutes. But she couldn’t reveal her own identity.
“Now is not the time to present the evidence,” Patrick explained. “I want that woman to live in fear and anxiety. For years, she never gave a second thought to what she did. She deserves to live in terror until the day the truth finally explodes.”
“You’re right. People like her shouldn’t get off easy. Teach her a good lesson.”
At that moment, Old Mr. Fairchild couldn’t hold back any longer. “What’s your relationship with Natalie?” he asked.
“Years ago, Natalie and I were both selected for the Helios Institute for Advanced Minds and studied at Aurelis Imperial University. She was my junior.”
Alarm bells immediately went off for Old Mr. Fairchild. A connection from their student days was often pure and powerful. Could he be the one that got away?
If so, his grandson was in deep trouble.
Ms. Marsh looked at Patrick. “Patrick, Grandma has complete faith in you. Even if she didn’t like you back then, you liked her. Love, requited or not, is a beautiful and unforgettable part of youth. That should count for something. You were a bit of a fool back then, just burying your nose in books instead of confessing. Your brothers are all Casanovas. If I had known you were too much of a nerd to speak up, I would have done it for you. You really let your nerdy side get the better of you.”
Patrick was speechless. That wasn’t what his grandmother used to say. She used to call him a prodigy descended from the heavens, brilliant and incredibly knowledgeable, the most accomplished child in the family. Now he was just a nerd?
Sensing Patrick’s discomfort, Rebecca quickly changed her tune.
“But it’s okay. What’s meant to be will be.”
Patrick’s expression softened slightly. Old Mr. Fairchild, however, grew more animated. “A missed chance is a missed chance. You can’t live in the past. Natalie needs someone to bring new excitement into her life. Someone like my grandson, Nicholas—an international racing champion. He’s got the looks, the money, and most importantly, he’s young, fit, and has plenty of stamina!”
Was he trying to pimp out his own grandson like a stud?
He was going all out. They couldn’t lose.
