That night had been an accident. She never expected to get pregnant, and she certainly never expected him to seek her out and offer to marry her.
She thought he was serious, but five years had failed to warm his heart.
It wouldn't have mattered if he'd fallen in love with someone else. She could have left quietly, made room for them. But why did it have to be his sister-in-law?
He forced her to respect the woman, to serve her. The thought of them laughing behind her back at her foolishness felt like a thousand ants gnawing at her heart, an agony she could barely stand.
He didn't have to love her, but how could he trample on her like this?
Just then, Marie, noticing Natalie in the corner, gave a subtle nod to a socialite in a yellow gown.
The woman, holding an empty wine glass, sauntered over to Natalie with a malicious glint in her eye.
"I'm finished with my drink. Take my glass."
Natalie's gaze was cold. "I'm not a waitress."
As Natalie turned to leave, the woman grabbed her arm, her voice dripping with contempt. "What kind of attitude is that? You're a lowly server. I ask you to take my glass, and you give me attitude? Who do you think you are?"
Natalie's eyes hardened, her voice dropping to a dangerous low. "Let go."
"Wearing a cheap, off-the-rack dress and you say you're not a waitress? Don't tell me you're some rich man's wife, ha!"
The woman let out a braying laugh, drawing the attention of others in the hall.
Natalie's expression turned glacial.
"Whether I'm a rich man's wife is irrelevant. What's more important is... which family's old woman are you? It seems even basic manners are beyond you."
