Darren had seen right through her. Victoria had indeed planned to arrange everything and then, if Darren refused to go, she would have tricked him or even threatened to harm herself to get him there.
“I’m doing all of this for you and for the Cross Group! The Ward Group is second only to the most prominent families in Eldoria City. If we merge with them, the Cross family can rise to that level. It would bring honor to our family name. It’s what your brother would have wanted. For the sake of the Cross Group, you should marry Marie and strengthen our family.”
Victoria knew that once Marie officially became the heir, she would either remarry or the Ward family would arrange for a man to marry into the family to inherit the group. She had to act first and ensure Marie married Darren, otherwise the Ward Group would fall into someone else's hands.
“I won’t cooperate with you. You arranged this wedding, so you can be the one to go. I’ve already made myself clear to Marie.”
“Darren, is your head made of concrete? Are you trying to kill me with anger?”
Just then, Darren's assistant burst in, looking panicked.
“Mr. Cross, it's bad! The Cross Group's stock has crashed. We’re going bankrupt!”
The news was such a shock that Victoria fainted on the spot.
Darren caught his mother as she collapsed. His eyes were cold. Terence had truly dealt the Cross Group a fatal blow.
Natalie, he thought, could she really be so heartless? To just stand by and watch Terence destroy the Cross Group? Even if she didn’t care about him, she should care about their son. If the Cross Group went bankrupt, what would happen to Hanley?
Hadn’t she considered that at all?

At the Lockwood residence.
“Mommy, where are you? Can you come back and stay with me for a bit?”
He had a bet with Lucas, after all.
Just then, he heard an adult’s voice on the other end of the line.
“A child shouldn’t be left home alone. I’ll send someone to pick him up and bring him here.”
Natalie looked at Terence. Although she didn’t want to trouble anyone, she really didn’t want to go back to the Cross estate. The memories there were not pleasant, and she had no desire to set foot in that house again.
Lucas chimed in, “Dad’s right! You can’t leave a little kid at home alone. That’s too dangerous. Let’s bring him here. Then we can all go to school together tomorrow.”
Hanley’s face fell. He had deliberately played the victim to trick his mom into coming back, only to have these people interfere. He didn't want to go to Lucas's house, and he certainly didn't want to sleep in their beds.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
