Susan paid no mind to Marie's darkening expression and briskly turned to Darren. "Darren, you're remarrying. Which family's daughter are you marrying?"
Linda said with a sigh, "If you ask me, Natalie was so wonderful. She was hardworking and polite. Why did you have to divorce her? Such a shame, such a shame."
Marie felt as if she had swallowed a fly. She was about to explode with anger.
Victoria's expression was grim. These poor relatives were an annoyance, but she couldn't afford to offend them.
In their region, clan ties were very strong. These relatives, though poor, held some seniority and couldn't be easily dismissed.
During the five years Natalie was married into the family, she had been the one to receive any relatives from the countryside. Victoria couldn't be bothered to interact with them.
Now that Natalie was gone, having to deal with these relatives herself was exasperating.
To make matters worse, they kept praising Natalie right in front of Marie. Weren't they just trying to stir up trouble?
"Susan, if they divorced, it's obviously because she wasn't good enough! Natalie is from the countryside and has a gambling-addicted father. Letting her live off the Cross family for five years was a great kindness to her."
"She lived off the Cross family? But when I visited before, she seemed quite busy. Taking care of the whole family day in and day out is no easy task."
Victoria's face darkened. Susan suddenly circled Victoria twice and then said, "You know, you're lucky to be alive. I remember five years ago, you were paralyzed in bed. We relatives back home were all thinking we'd have to prepare for your funeral. It was such a pity, you being so young."
Victoria looked down on these poor relatives, but in their region, family ties were strong. No matter how poor, you couldn't offend them.
"Madams, what are you saying? Of course we don't look down on you. You are our elders. Marie just wants you to be comfortable. After all, she's the young lady of the Ward family, so of course she's generous when hosting guests."
"Oh, so it's generosity. We thought it was because you looked down on us poor relatives from the countryside."
"Not at all, not at all!"
Victoria forced a smile, feeling like she was about to snap. She really wished Natalie were here. She could just dump these relatives on her and be done with it. She couldn't be bothered to sit here and play nice with them.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
