Marie never imagined that Darren would look at Natalie the moment he picked up the wedding ring.
Her heart felt like it was in a vise.
She was terrified that Darren would suddenly get on one knee and propose to Natalie with that very ring.
If that happened, she would have nothing left.
Marie quickly grabbed Darren's hand, forcing his attention back to her.
Her hands trembled as she said with fear in her eyes, “Darren, thank you for still being willing to marry me at a time like this. I know you're trying to show everyone that I didn't murder my brother. You believe in me, and you’re supporting me with your actions. I know you’re not marrying me out of love, but if I’m lucky enough to escape the Lockwood family's plot, I promise I will be the best wife to you.”
Her eyes were pleading, as if she were moments away from being framed and sentenced to death.
Darren looked at her and said, “Don’t worry, I won't let anything happen to you.”
Marie's eyes turned red. “Let go of your hand,” Darren said gently. “I’ll put the ring on.”
Hearing his words, Marie finally loosened her grip on his hand.
Darren was about to put the ring on her. Once it was on, she would be his wife.
Marie held out her hand, and Darren started to slide the ring onto her finger.
The officiant announced excitedly, “The couple will now exchange rings! May your love last a lifetime, a bond for all time!”
The ring was just at the tip of her finger when Darren heard the officiant's words, “a bond for all time.” An involuntary tremor ran through his hand.
The ring slipped, fell to the floor, and rolled away.
No one had expected the ring to drop.
Marie’s eyes widened in disbelief. She had seen the ring about to slide onto her finger, and just like that, it was gone.
She dropped to the ground, frantically searching for it, but it had rolled out of sight.
As Marie and Darren searched for the ring on the stage, laughter erupted from the audience.
“It's like even their ancestors don't want them to get married.”
“Well, she was his brother’s wife and he was her brother-in-law. Even their ancestors disapprove! Ha!”
“If the ancestors don't approve, you shouldn't tempt fate. You might have some ghosts to answer to otherwise! Haha.”
The cackles of some old women in the crowd made Marie feel even more furious and humiliated.
She was Ms. Ward, a woman of her standing. How dare these old hags laugh at her? This was all Natalie's fault!
Marie suddenly stormed over to Natalie. “You hid the ring, didn't you? You don't want me and Darren to get married, do you?”
Natalie scoffed. “You only get so much dignity. Can't you try to save a little?”

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
