Natalie said calmly, “You're the one who called her 'Mom' for over twenty years, not me. You have the nerve to kill the woman who raised you for two decades, so why would I care? I've only met her a few times, and every single time, she humiliated, mocked, and belittled me for your sake. Don't you think it's ridiculous to use her life as a threat against me?”
Hearing this, Elaine's heart ached with sorrow. She recalled all the cruel things she had done to Natalie. Every harsh word she had ever said now felt like a knife, slowly carving up her heart.
Marie suddenly burst into loud laughter. “Did you hear that, Mother? This is your precious biological daughter! She's telling me to kill you! She said even if you died right in front of her, it wouldn't be enough to threaten her. Is this the daughter you were so desperate to find?”
Richard frowned deeply and said to Natalie, “Natalie, calm down. I know your mother and I have wronged you, but she's in Marie's hands right now. Marie dared to harm your brother, which means she's capable of harming your mother. We have to cooperate with her.”
“My brother? My mother? Sorry, but I don't know you people. Don't go claiming relatives you don't have.”
Richard's face darkened. Marie laughed loudly.
Elaine said to Richard, “Richard, don't blame her. It's all my fault. I never gave her a kind look. For Marie's sake, I humiliated her every time. I was the one who encouraged Marie to steal Darren from her. I was the one who let Marie take her child. It's only natural that she hates me and resents me. I can't blame her for not acknowledging me. I'm just so stupid. Raising someone else's daughter for decades while hurting my own... someone like me doesn't even deserve to live!”
Richard said, “Elaine, don't get worked up. Now that we've found Natalie, we can make it up to her. But if something happens to you, how can we possibly do that?”
Natalie replied calmly, “Isn't that *your* mother? You were always so proud to be Ms. Ward. Fine, if you want the title that badly, you can have it. I don't care. Consider it a handout.”
Marie had always been the one looking down on others, the one to belittle Natalie. When had she ever been humiliated like this? She said furiously, “Natalie, who the hell do you think you are? You think you have the right to talk to me like that?”
Marcus said nervously, “Natalie, don't provoke Marie anymore. She'll really hurt Mom. Just let her go!”
Natalie said coldly, “Mr. Ward, I’m your savior, but we’re not family. I saved you out of a doctor's sense of duty. Not letting Marie get away is a matter of justice.”
