“Darren, your pulse tells me you're in serious danger. You can't joke around anymore. Since you arranged all this, you must have a way to contact the people outside. Call them now, tell them to come rescue you.”
Natalie was on edge. She knew how bad his condition was, but she couldn't find any useful herbs, and she didn't have any medical supplies with her.
Right now, there was nothing she could do to save Darren. She also knew that if they waited any longer, he would die.
Darren gave a weak, sheepish smile. “Yeah, it was a setup. I made sure we wouldn’t be interrupted until morning. I really thought I could win you back tonight. Instead, it looks like I'm going to get myself killed. If word gets out, everyone will probably laugh at me.”
He laughed awkwardly, and Natalie finally understood. He really had no way to call the people outside, and the snakebite was a genuine accident. What were they going to do now?
“Darren, you're insane! You're not this kind of foolish person. Why would you do something like this?”
Natalie was furious. Darren had always been such a serious, meticulous person. Had he gone mad? Why would he play such a stupid game? He was about to joke himself to death.
“You're right, I've never been a foolish person. But I lost you, and I wanted to get you back. I wanted to put in some effort, create a little romance. I just didn't expect to romance myself to death. In the future, when you think back on this, do you think you'll find it funny? Will it bring you a little happiness?”
“What's there to be happy about? How am I supposed to be happy watching you die in front of me?”
“Natalie... I was bitten by the snake because I was saving you. So if I die, can you promise not to forget me?”
In that moment, Darren was utterly humbled. Natalie had never seen him like this. Throughout their five-year marriage, he had always been so proud. Now he was begging her not to forget him.
Darren let out a weak sigh. “When did you become so cold-hearted? But even with a heart of stone, you're still so beautiful. You have this face that can look so innocent one moment and so commanding the next. It's truly beautiful.”
Natalie felt like she was going crazy listening to him. The venom must be making him delirious.
Natalie pushed Darren's hand away and got up, continuing her search for anything useful. But the cave was empty; there was nothing that could help. It couldn't be... there had to be *something*, some kind of plant!
A feeling of helplessness coiled around Natalie's heart like a venomous snake.
Just then, she heard Darren's faint, broken voice. “I... I'm so cold. So cold. Natalie... hold me.”
