Edgar Lockwood coughed loudly and looked at Grace Lockwood. “Terence likes her, but does that mean he can just marry her? What kind of grandmother are you? Letting your son marry damaged goods and tarnish the Lockwood name? From the day you married into this family, my mother told you that the Lockwood name is the most important thing. Have you forgotten?”
Grace Lockwood’s expression grew conflicted.
“But are we supposed to tear apart two people in love? At our age, all we should want is for our children and grandchildren to be happy.”
“He can be with Natalie,” Edgar said sternly, “but he has to choose. He can’t have both the woman and the company. If he chooses Natalie, he must give up his position as CEO of the Lockwood Group.”
Mrs. Lockwood was about to lose her mind. This old fraud was taking advantage of her mother-in-law’s confusion to make a play for the Lockwood Group. He was relentless.
Trying to control her emotions, Mrs. Lockwood said, “ Edgar Lockwood, how long have you been here? Isn’t your... other family member back home worried about you?”
Mrs. Lockwood had done her research. His long-time mistress was still alive and was currently in Marentis.
“What?” Grace asked, confused. “What other family member?”
“Catherine, you’ve failed to raise your son properly, and now you’re spouting nonsense?” Edgar said angrily. “Let me tell you, if your son insists on marrying Natalie, he will hand over his position as CEO of the Lockwood Group. I will not allow him to disgrace the Lockwood family name.”
Edgar’s fury was a front to hide his own guilt. Grace looked even more puzzled. “But what did you mean about his family member? Are you confused, too, Catherine?”
Suddenly, Edgar raised his hand and slapped Mrs. Lockwood across the face.
“I’m warning you. Don’t you dare touch my wife. Don’t you even think about dragging her into this!”
A thin line of blood welled at the corner of her split lip, her head snapping to the side from the force of the blow.
“You’re certainly protective of your long-time mistress. But don’t you feel the least bit guilty standing next to my mother-in-law?”
“Do you have any idea what happened after you faked your death? All the distant Lockwood relatives tried to seize the family business, bullying a widow and her young son. And then the raiders came. While my mother-in-law was dragging your son through the blood and ashes of war, you were playing house in Marentis with your mistress. Don’t you feel any remorse? Did you ever wonder if your wife and child would die in the chaos of war? My mother-in-law lost her husband young and her son in middle age. She has suffered so much. How dare you still trample on her?”
