"If you're scared to be alone, I think you could come stay with us."
"Forget it. Grandma would never agree."
After they finished handing out the flyers, Hanley looked at Natalie, who was busy working. "I'm heading out now," he said.
Later that night, when Hanley was home alone, he thought about all the ways he had hurt his mother. How could he have been so awful?
Why did Mommy like Lucas and Liana? Because they were obedient. They would never hurt her; they were warm and kind people.
When Natalie finished her work and came out, she noticed Hanley was gone.
"Where's Hanley?"
Lucas said, "He went home. Natalie, I actually feel bad for Hanley. His dad never comes home, and his grandma is out playing cards, leaving him all alone at night. He's really scared. Why don't we bring him to our house to sleep?"
Liana nodded vigorously and began to sign.
"Natalie, let's go get Hanley! He's all alone and so scared. I couldn't stand it if it were me. Please, can we bring him home?"
Natalie fell silent for a moment. Terence said, "Then let's all go together."
Natalie turned to look at Terence, who gave her a gentle smile.
"Hanley is your son. He's been through a lot lately. I think he's probably learned a great deal."
Natalie nodded. It was true, Hanley had changed.
After all, he had stood up for her and even helped hand out flyers.
Hanley was so terrified he fell right off the bed. The snake slithered toward him, its head rearing up as it flicked its forked tongue.
Hanley was scared out of his wits. He wanted to run, but the snake was on the bed, its body raised, looking down on him. He was frozen in sheer terror, his heart stopping as the world went cold around him.
Help me! Mommy, please, help me!
Panic clawed at his throat as the color drained from his face, leaving him as pale as a ghost.
On the road, Natalie suddenly felt a tightness in her chest.
Terence asked, "What's wrong? You look pale. Are you not feeling well?"
Natalie replied, "It's nothing. I just have a sudden feeling of panic."
