Hanley was having nightmares all night, but he could feel a steady, comforting hand on his shoulder, which made him feel safe.

When he woke up, he saw Lucas hugging him, with one hand still resting on his chest. He moved slightly, and heard Lucas mumble in his sleep, “Don’t be scared, don’t be scared. I’m here, I’m here.”

Hanley then realized that the person comforting him all night had been Lucas.

Just then, Liana noticed Hanley was awake. She said, “Hanley, you’re awake! Daddy already made breakfast. Let’s go eat.”

Hanley said in shock, “You can talk.”

Liana froze. She had only spoken to comfort Hanley and tell him to come eat, knowing he wouldn’t understand her hand signals.

Liana felt incredibly awkward.

Hanley looked at her. “You can talk, so why have you been pretending to be mute?”

“You want her to be your mommy again, but she’s our mommy now, too.”

“Then you can just live with us! Your daddy is never around, and your grandma doesn’t spend time with you. Why don’t you just live at our house? The three of us can grow up together, and we can all have a mommy. How about that?”

Hanley thought about it and realized it seemed to make sense. Could they really do that?

Just then, Lucas rubbed his eyes and said, “What can we do?”

Lucas looked at Hanley. “Oh, you’re awake.”

“Oh, man, you had nightmares all night.”

Hanley said, “Yeah. I guess I’m not suited to be here. I’ll just cause you guys trouble.”
