Chapter 24
DYLAN
Beckett was holding my hand as we entered the cafe that was right around the next block from Hunter’s building.

I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea, so I was trying my best to snatch my hand away from him, but he was holding my hand too tight, as if he was afraid to let me go.
“I’m glad you finally came to your senses,” he said as soon as I got our table. He was seated right beside me, but I swiftly moved to the chair across from him so we could be facing each other.
Beckett looked stunned, clearly not expecting that move. His brows drew together slightly, and for a brief second, I saw a flash of something in his eyes. I wasn’t sure. But I knew I didn’t owe him comfort anymore.
He quickly shook off the stunned look on his face and smiled once again as he gently reached for my hand on the table.
“This was all a misunderstanding, Dylan. Sarah thought she was helping me, so she filed the papers. But I have no plan of sending those papers to court. I’m just pissed because you can’t understand the situation with Sarah and my son; that’s why I signed it. But now that it was all clear, you can come back home now.”
I stared at him for a beat, letting his words settle. A while ago, I would’ve melted just from seeing that smile. Now, it only made my stomach twist.
I blew a loud, exasperated sigh. “I didn’t bring you here because I changed my mind,” I said softly but firmly. “I wanted to let you know that I have no plans of going back to your house.”
His smile faltered. “I need to be there for my son, Dylan. Why don’t you understand it?”
I smiled without reaching my eyes. “No one’s stopping you, Beckett? You can be the best father of the year for all I care. But I don’t see how your action will fit into this narrative. Why are you doing this? Why are you forcing me to go back when you already have everything you wanted? You have the son you always wanted and Sarah, who has always been the love of your life.”
He remained silent as he listened to every word I said.
“Beckett,” I continued, keeping my voice steady even as my heart raced, “you had years. I gave you everything I had, and all I ever wanted was for you to love me back. But you didn’t.”
He opened his mouth, but I raised a hand to stop him.
“I’m not blaming you. I’m just done chasing someone who never looked back.” I looked down at the table, gathering the last of my courage. “I’ve wasted years of my life loving you, Beckett. And now, it’s time for me to let go of that feeling. I’m moving on, and I’m hoping you’d do the same.”
A heavy silence settled between us. I could feel the shift in the air, the weight of everything left unsaid finally pressing down.
He looked at me like he didn’t know who I was anymore. And maybe he didn’t because I wasn’t the same

woman who begged him to choose me.

Beckett’s jaw tensed. For a long moment, he didn’t say a word. His hands curled into fists on top of the table, knuckles white against the wood. I could almost see the storm brewing behind his eyes.
“So this is it?” he finally said, his voice low and tight. “After everything, you’re really walking away?”
I took a breath. “I’m not walking away, Beckett. I already walked. A long time ago. You just didn’t notice.”
His gaze dropped to the table, and for the first time, I saw his confidence waver. The man who always had control–the one who expected me to stay, to forgive, to love unconditionally–was now grasping at something already gone.
“Is this because I’ve slept with Sarah days before our wedding? Are you mad because you think I cheated on you? Dylan, I didn’t cheat on you. Sarah was my girlfriend before you became such a brat and forced me to marry you! Honestly, it was all your fault we’re in this situation right now.”
I smiled sadly. “Maybe you’re right. These are all my fault. I’m taking all the responsibility for what happened. So now, I’m freeing you, Beckett. You can start over again with Sarah and your son. I’m sorry for what I did back then.”
His face darkened. “Was this because of that man? You found a new prey to hunt, so you’re dumping me? What, I don’t excite you anymore?” He said, his tone was laced with insults.
I frowned in irritation. I dare him to accuse me of something like that when he’s the one who brought his first love and their love child into our home.
“Hunter has nothing to do with this!” I firmly denied it. “Our marriage was over the moment you brought Sarah into our home. So if you are looking for someone to blame, blame Sarah.”
“Keep Sarah out of this! Above all of us, she’s the victim here!”
Of course, despite him saying he wants me back, he was still on Sarah’s side and never on mine. I blew a loud sigh. Coming here was a mistake.
“I think we’re done here. I hope I made myself clear. Stop forcing me to go back. I don’t care what Sarah did, but for me, our marriage is done. Goodbye, Beckett,” I said before I stood from my chair. I was about to leave when he grabbed my wrist. I winced when I felt pain as he was gripping my wrist too tight.
“You don’t get to tap out just like that when you’re the one who forced me into this marriage. We won’t be in this situation if you didn’t ruin my relationship with Sarah,” he said in a low, threatening tone.
“I get it, Beckett. It’s all my fault!” I said, my voice trembling as emotions poured out of me like an open wound. “What more do you want from me? Do you want me to say? I already apologized, didn’tI?” I exclaimed. “Shouldn’t you be happy now that you’re free to be with the woman you truly love? So why are you forcing us to stay in this miserable marriage?”
My voice cracked at the end, my chest rising and falling with the weight of my pain. I didn’t realize my hands were shaking until I saw the way his eyes flicked down to them. Beckett just stood there, caught in the whirlwind of my words, looking like I had slapped him across the face.
For a moment, he didn’t say anything. His grip on my wrist loosened slightly, just enough.

That was all I needed.
Without wasting a second, I yanked my arm free and took off toward the door, desperate to get out of this messy situation. I suddenly felt an urge to go back to Hunter’s place, where I feel safe.
But I hadn’t made it far. Barely a few steps outside the café, and suddenly he was behind me again. His hand grabbed mine, fingers curling tight around my wrist.
“Let go of me, Beckett!” I cried, trying to pull away again, but this time his grip was firmer, rougher.
He didn’t say a word. He just dragged me across the sidewalk, past startled onlookers, and toward his black car parked along the curb.
“Beckett, stop!” I yelled, struggling as he opened the passenger–side door.
But he didn’t stop.
With one strong shove, he forced me inside. The door slammed shut before I could even scream, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the hollow space of my chest.
My heart pounded wildly. My hands trembled as I stared at him through the window, his face tight with
anger.
I tried to open the door, but it was locked. I watched him walk around the car and slide into the driver’s seat.
