I knew this was a dream the second I opened my eyes and saw images of Elianna from the time Eloise had given birth to her to this adorable girl in pink who looked like she was around Bridget’s age. She had a fuzzy pink blanket over her head which she was using as a veil.

‘And who are you going to marry?’ Eloise asked, smiling as she caressed the girl’s round, pinkish cheeks.

‘Black.’

Her mother frowned while I froze.

‘Who?’

‘Black. Do you know any Black, mommy? I don’t know who he is I just know that he’s the man I’m marrying?’ ‘How do you even know that?’

‘When my classmates and I are talking about princes, fairytales, and how they lived happily ever after, I thought of it. Of Black. The girls in the class said they’re marrying a prince. I told them I’m marrying Black. They asked who he was. I couldn’t answer. I just know his name. The girl scratched her head. ‘Mom, if you know Black, if you meet him someday, tell him he has to be more handsome than a prince. That’s what I told my classmates. He doesn’t have a horse like many princes. But he has a wolf. Amazing, isn’t it?’

Eloise became pale. ‘A… wolf?’

‘Yeah. I dreamt of it. He has to be rich and if he wants me to marry him, it has to be in a castle. I’d invite my friends over, and they’d know I wasn’t making it up.’

I chuckled. She did sound like she was making it up although he bright eyes could convince anyone that ‘Black’ was real. If she declared that the earth was flat, she could probably make people believe it. Even at a young age, my mate’s convincing skill was top notch.

She had always known about me. About us.

Even if we had not met yet, she believed it.

“Tell him he has to be very wealthy so he could buy us many foods and pink dresses. I’ll be waiting

Eloise shook her head. ‘And you? What are you going to do while you wait for this…. Black?’

Elianna rolled her eyes. ‘Duh. I’m going to stay pretty like this. I’m his princess. He shouldn’t be making me do anything!

‘I don’t think that’s how it works, sweetie-

‘Mommy, please tell him that I want a ring like this. If his ring doesn’t glitter like this, I won’t marry him.’

She was too young and bursting with energy that she didn’t let her mother speak as she told her ideas about her fairytale wedding. In the end, Eloise could not do anything but listen with a smile because it was difficult not to do that. Not to smile at her thrilled face.

I listened and took a long look at the ring from the magazine. I watched more flashes of Elianna’s childhood. I watched her dream about me and eventually forgot about me. I watched her fall in love and marry another man, never talking or thinking about a certain ‘Black’ again.

And then I watched her remember it.

I watched her remember us.

It happened the first time she saw my wolf beside her bed although she pretended not to notice. After that, she ran to the en suite bathroom.

‘Creed… what have you done?’ she wept. ‘That must have been so painful.’

‘My mate is hiding things from me, I heard her say to Alistair during astral projection, something that I had only heard dragons do before but never witnessed. I knew in an instant that she was talking about my wolf.

Alistair raised his brow. ‘Is that why you resorted to this? As a form of vengeance?’

‘No. But Creed has sacrificed so much of himself for me and I want to be able to do something for him at least.’

‘Having you as a mate should be more than enough for that man to be thanking his lucky stars every night of his life. You are a dragon princess. The heir to the highest and most desired throne in the world. You do not have to do anything for that alpha bastard, princess. I bet you just have to stand there and breathe, and he will already feel blessed.

If Alistair was alive after the war, I would make sure to unalive him.

Even if what he said was true, that fucker did not have to word it like that.

‘You don’t understand, Alistair’

Of course, he didn’t. What did a fossil like him know about us? He was too old; he must have forgotten even his age. What would he know about a human heart? He did not have one.

To my surprise, Elianna did not say anything about my wolf to him. She kept it a secret even if it bothered her.

‘I don’t know if you are being reckless or bold, princess.’

She smiled at him. ‘How about both?’

Indeed, she was both. Watching her do all that work behind my back was the most fascinating thing I had ever seen and also the most agonizing. I could now understand the sadness in Elianna’s eyes that night. It was because of Dale, of people around us that betrayed us.

She was sad for me and my sister. She was in pain because of us, of what we might feel about the betrayal.

And there, right at the end of the flashbacks, I saw her.

At long last.

She was standing at the center of a flower field in the middle of the night. The wind was playing with the strands of her hair.

“Elianna.”

She turned to me and sobbed. “Creed!”

I did not make her run to me or meet me halfway because she was right. She did not have to do anything. She just had to stay alive, stand there, and wait for me like the princess that she was.

“Did we make it?”

I knew she was talking about the war. I wiped her tears and nodded, “Yes, we did. And it was because of you.”

“No, we did it together, Creed. You, me, your sister, the dragons, he mages, the werewolves. All of us.”
