Chapter 123
(Eli)
I no longer had to wonder what he looked like, what he sounded like. I just never thought it would take us this long before meeting each other. My son was here right in front of me, greeting me with that sweetest smile,
Zane Black was Creed’s tiny and innocent version. It started as a small sound until I could no longer stop myself, I was full on sobbing by the time I got up and reached out to my son with my shaking hands.
He stood on the bed. God, he could stand now. Pride, amazement, and agony swirled in my chest. I didn’t even get to see him learn to roll, sit, or crawl. I missed so many beautiful moments of his life. I missed an entire year. When he walked towards me, I gently pulled him closer and brought him to my arms.
“Hello, son,” I cried.
“Need you mam-ma,” he whispered. “Love you.”
With him this close to me and still unable to conceal his thoughts, I saw flashes of his memories. I heard how Creed kept whispering those words to me every single night with our son beside him. It was like hearing them straight from his dad. It was like Creed was professing to me through this little guy.
“I need you too, sweetie,” I answered as I stroked his chubby cheeks. “Mama loves you so much.”
Zane kissed my cheeks, the tip of my nose, my forehead, and then my eyelids, copying his father, making me cry harder. He grew up as sweet as his daddy. What had I done right to deserve such an adorable little boy?
“I’m so sorry mama took so long to come back to you, sweetheart.”
Even if he was too young to understand, he blessed me with his smile as he dipped his finger into my cheek. And then he kissed me there again.
So, this was what it felt like to become a mother. It was like having your heart broken and then feeling it rebuild itself again by being with your child. It was becoming vulnerable and weak and yet, in my son’s eyes, I was perfect. I was strong. It was regaining strength in the way he saw me. It was falling in love with a tiny creature and never stopping.
Creed’s wolf jumped up the bed and joined the reunion. He showed me how much he missed me by licking my cheek. I gave him the hug he seemed to be waiting for.
“I know,” I told him softly as I kissed the tip of his nose. “I missed you too. Thank you for protecting my son on my behalf.”
His tail wagged happily as a response and once he was satisfied with licking me, he plopped down on the bed and rubbed his soft and silky fur against my knee, making me laugh and cry at the same time.
There was only one person missing for our little family to be complete. I looked around the master bedroom, he wasn’t here. If only my legs were not weak right now, I would rush down to find him.
‘Creed, where are you?’
(Creed)
When I heard the sound of wings flapping, I stepped out of the door. Lizbeth was already outside with splashes of chocolate on her apron and cheeks. She must have been baking a cake for her nephew when she heard them. Both of us frowned at the countless dragons flying around our house. The sun was yet to rise. It was too early for all of them to piss us off.
But then my wolf roared and so did the dragons. This time, I knew it was not a sound meant for a war. It was different. They seemed to be rejoicing… which could only mean one thing.
I ran inside the house, back to the master bedroom where my son was quietly playing beside his sleeping mother with my wolf guarding them both.
