Chapter 126
(Eli)
Four years ago, if someone told me that I’d be able to talk positively about men, especially about that four-letter-word that Landon taught me to loathe, I’d probably laughed like a madwoman.
Like every girl in this table, like mom when she was my age, I loved recklessly.
Landon got all my good parts. He met me when I was still innocent, when I was too easy to fool. Creed, on the other hand, met me when I was smarter but cynical. We found each other during our worst days. Our beginning was messy; our past was filthy. But all that changed when we fell.
Four years ago, I’d sworn off all cocks. Now I had a mate with a cock to die for.
I shook my head. The subject strayed too far. When I looked at the girls, they were grinning as if they knew my mind drifted to something naughty. My mom cleared her throat and sat straight.
“I’m no expert. I’m still learning. But with Creed, I learned that love shouldn’t feel like a battle you have to win. If it’s with the right person, love feels calm. Like strolling on a clear day.” Looking back, I didn’t even know about clear days before Creed, before Zane. All I was familiar with were the dark ones. “Now that I think about it, maybe love exists because life is fucking hard. And we need it to make living a little less tiring and a little bit encouraging.”
Lizbeth bit her lower lip. The rest of the girls around us glanced at their respective partners. Silver fondly winked at Leo. Shanty was married while Carmie was engaged.
Marriage. Engagement. I frowned at those words and glanced at my ring finger. After three months, I found myself in the middle of a dilemma. I once told Creed I’d be the craziest woman in the world if I were to get married again. I’d shut down the idea so quickly. He told me to let him know if I was ready to be crazy again. I knew he had always wanted to take the next step but he was waiting for me.
I was ready now.
In fact, I looked forward to wearing his ring.
But how was I supposed to tell him that without being too obvious about it?
“Mom-ma!”
I automatically stood up
when I saw Zane running towards me with cookies that he snatched from the buffet. I was was going to offer them to me again even if they were his favorites too.
“He’s adorable and he’s beautiful,” Lizbeth whispered as she stood beside me with watery eyes. “His eyes are exactly like yours, but when he smiles or giggles like tonight, his eyes become gold.”
Now it was my turn to get emotional as I closed my eyes for a second to picture it. I smiled gratefully. Moments later, Lizbeth wrapped her arms around me. I felt her tears trickling down my shoulder.
“Why are you crying?”
“Because both of you look so beautiful.”
“That’s new. Crying about beautiful things,” I replied while patting her gently on the back.
“Thank you, Eli, and I’m so, so sorry,” she whispered instead.
“For what?”
“For everything.”
I didn’t get to answer her when Zane reached us and raised his arms. Lizbeth released me while I eagerly carried my son as he offered me the treats in his tiny and wet hands which made all of us at the table laugh.
“For me?” I teased as I playfully rubbed the tip of his nose against mine, making him giggle.
“For you, mom-ma,” he answered with eyes like his father, shining with so much adoration.
“Thank you, sweetie.” I ate the treats while he stared at me contentedly. “Why don’t you give some to your aunt Liz? She’s feeling a little sad tonight.”
He frowned so adorably as he remembered there were other people apart from us. He turned to his aunt. “You sad, auntie?”
“Just a little.”
He offered two cookies to her aunt which the latter ate with tears still rolling down her cheeks. “You still sad?”
Lizbeth shook her head and smiled as she kissed his cheeks. “Not anymore. Thank you, Zane. You’re the sweetest.”
My son was like me in many ways. He loved food and like me, he must have thought that sadness could be cured with sweets as he beamed at his aunt. I finally understood what they meant when they said that shifter babies were more advanced than humans. Zane could communicate clearly, could understand instructions, could run with steady feet, and could memorize the flags and cities in every realm.
