“SIT,” Sebastian commanded as he motioned to the seat in front of him when he saw me approaching with

my tray.

I frowned at him. What did he think of me? A dog who would readily obey his one-word commands?

I smirked. He smirked back, thinking I would follow although his expression darkened after seeing me walk past his table. He had to learn to treat me like a person if he wanted me to sit with him. I couldn’t go to my hideout since it was still raining. I had to make do with the dining hall today.

There were more invitations that I refused.

Thankfully, I found a familiar soul. A smile automatically curved my lips as I stood in front of Sophie’s table. “Hi! Do you mind if I sit with you?”

Her lips parted. She looked around and winced. When I followed where she was looking and caught the alphas who invited me glaring at her, my wolf instantly growled at them. I blocked Sophie’s view of them.

“Are you sure you want to sit with me?”

My brows furrowed. “Of course.”

“But there are other girls…” Sophie glanced hesitantly at the other admin staff who were also having their lunch. She bit her lower lip before saying, “And alphas who want you to be with them.”

“So? I know I’d only enjoy sitting with you.”

Eating was a sacred thing for me. If I sat with people I wanted to kill every ten seconds, I would have an indigestion. The alphas around only saw me as a proper student after seeing me spar. If not for that, I’d still be a toy in their eyes, a toy they thought they could manipulate. Despite that, I knew they weren’t just wolves. They were hyenas who may be smiling at me today but wouldn’t think twice about stabbing me in the back

tomorrow.

Alphas wouldn’t be alphas without some backstabbing. Years of experience taught me that.

Sophie blushed. “T-then please take a seat, Ari.”

“Thanks.”

The loudest growl I heard when I finally sat in front of her came from Sebastian’s wolf. I ignored him and focused on my lunch. I needed to recharge. The spar took most of my energy. The Ancient must have used a spell because as soon as we headed back into the building, our hair and clothes dried although my shirt still had some traces of blood on it.

After the class with the Ancient, there was no time to rest. There were two more subjects that followed about history and pack management before the class was over for the day.

Sophie and I sat in a comfortable silence.

“So, how was Alpha Sebastian as a roommate?” Sophie asked after some time.

I clicked my tongue. “Two out of ten. Would not recommend.”

She giggled. “What? Why?”

I finished my steak before replying, “It’s best if you wouldn’t know, Sophie. That way, you can keep the filtered version of him in your head.”

Because the raw, unfiltered version sucked. And since Sebastian’s wolf was listening to us at the moment like the creep that he was, I couldn’t simply say that.

“How’s your experience with the academy so far?”

I frowned. I could see Sophie desperately trying to fill the silence between us. I’d often see her after the evening run. She brought towels and bottles of water for me which made the men tease her, which was also the reason why she would bolt after giving me those.

Unlike our first time chatting, she seemed tense today. Despite that, I indulged her. “The academy itself is nice. I’m still adjusting. This place and the people here are different compared to what I’m used to. Everyone’s young, rich, and powerful.”

“And you?”

“Just young.”

I wanted to add good-looking on the list. But Sophie had eyes. I was sure she could already tell.

“Your father is rich so technically, you are rich too, Ari.”

I shrugged, “Am I?”

August was free to visit the werewolf realm, but he didn’t have influence here unlike in the realm he came from. That’s why he couldn’t take me with him, that’s also why we couldn’t save Dani.

If I were truly rich, I wouldn’t be here. But that also meant that I wouldn’t have been left at the orphanage. If that happened, I wouldn’t have met Dani, my sister by heart, the little girl who followed me since her mother dropped her there. She stuck by my side, slept beside me with her arms and legs wrapped around me as if she was terrified that I would leave her too like her mother. She cried if I wasn’t with her and would call me nonstop. I bet she was also crying today.

My eyes watered at the thought.

“Ari?”

1 blinked back the tears. “Yeah?”

“Are you okay?”

No, I wasn’t. I missed my sister. I missed my dad. I was lonely. Tired. And freaking mad at the world. Okay would be the last word I’d used to describe the state I was in. But like before, I had to hold it in. I diverted the

question because that was too hard to answer. “How about you? Why are you sitting here alone?”

“I prefer it this way. The girls wouldn’t be able to converse normally if I’m with them.”

That distracted me somehow. “Why not?”

She motioned her face

“What about it”

It’s because of my looks” she whispered, looking exasperated because she had to say it. She looked down and covered her face.

“Sophie. I’m sorry but it’s either I’m too slow or you’re being too vague because I really don’t get it. What’s wrong with your looks”

“Ari.”she groaned. Are you for real?”

“Take your hands off your face and look at me.”

Na

I’m snatching your steak. If you don’t look at me right now, I’ll be taking your entire tray as my hostage.”

Slowly, she took her hands off her face. She was now smiling. “You’re crazy.”

“And so I heard. Now tell me what’s wrong.”

She motioned the left side of her face which had a long scar from the center of her forehead down her left ear which must have been brought by a spell. I’d seen it the first time we met and I didn’t care.

“I still don’t see what’s wrong. Everyone has scars. And you’re pretty.”

Her eyes watered. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For telling me that. For looking at me and not feeling pity unlike most people. I got this from the mage realm when my father brought me there when I was younger. There was an explosion in the woods that affected the dragon royalties and me too who was hiding there at the time. It nearly blinded me. Since then, people started looking at me differently. No men wanted a scarred girl, and my friends couldn’t talk about their love lives with me without feeling awkward about it because nobody wanted damaged goods like me.”

“I’m also a part of the damaged goods. Should we just live together?”

Sebastian’s wolf growled once again. Sophie flinched. “Don’t mind him. Like I said, you’re pretty. And anyone who couldn’t see that doesn’t deserve you”

This was bad. She was blushing hard and her pulse was racing. I stood up. For a moment there, I’d forgotten that I was supposed to be a guy. “I have to go back to the dorm. I’ll see you again, Sophie.”

Not as Ari Gray, but as Alexandra Reese. One day, Dani, Sophie, and I could just live together if no one wanted her. We could be a family.

I returned my tray and decided to just return to the dorm despite the rain. A car stopped outside the building. It was Aidan’s. I could hear his wolf from here, calling mine. Daniel immediately stepped out of the car and prepared the umbrella for him and was about to escort him outside when he shook his head and held the umbrella on his own.

Our eyes met.

Just like that and he was heading in my direction.
