used to hate Ari’s confidence. He had too much of it. Sometimes, he looked at the rest of the alphas like we were all beneath him. Other times, he looked like we terrorized him. I had never met anyone with a tongue so sharp that I found myself tempted to bite it just so he could shut up for once although there were days when his lips distracted me too much hat I forgot I was supposed to be furious because he had just insulted me yet again.

However, after seeing Ari in this state, I realized I would rather hear him insult me again than see him too tired to say a Nord. He looked like he had given up the fight, like he was truly tired of living.

He was only twenty, for goddess’ sake. Why did he look like he had gone through a dozen lifetimes already? The pure and raw exhaustion in his purple eyes stabbed me straight in the gut.

Did Aidan see the same thing? Was that the reason why he was very protective of Ari?

Bradley turned his back on us.

I glanced at Nero. “Ari only has to stay in the quadrangle for two more hours, right? There are no other rules?”

‘None. I asked around.”

‘I see. Help him up.” I bent down. “Put him on my back.”

His eyes widened. “W-what? Are you sure? You just came from a mission. Aren’t you tired?”

I hadn’t slept properly in weeks, courtesy of his friend. I was tired as hell. But there was no need for an outsider to know any of that. “I can manage. Just do it.”

Rules were still rules. Even if I loathed Bradley right now, if Ari would fail to comply with his punishment, the

administrators would see it as an act of rebellion. They could use it as a reason to kick him out of the Academy which was Bradley’s main goal.

His mind had always worked differently, the reason why Her Excellency herself admired his brilliance. Jacques Rosewood, the former dragon king, personally chose Bradley as Elianna Black’s instructor when she was still learning the ins and outs of the dragon world.

That’s why I was sure he knew his student’s temper. I was also sure that he incited Ari’s outburst. And when it happened, he punished Shorty. He must have known that Ari would fail complying with the punishment,

He was waiting for it.

The professors in BMB were carefully selected by the previous king Terrence Becket, the current king Leo McAllister, and lord Creed Black. Out of thousands of applicants, Bradley Laurent was the first to pass all their tests with flying colors. He was the most respected and most feared professor at the same time. He was also the hardest to impress. Maybe it was because he used to train the dragons in the dragon realm.

But anyone couldn’t deny that the students he handled and passed became outstanding citizens of the city and had made great contributions in and out of the realm. No one meddled with how Bradley taught and trained his students.

His orders were absolute. If he had given a punishment, I was sure the professors and the administrators would believe the student deserved it. Five hours of running time was a tolerable punishment for alphas but for those with hidden injuries, it was an impossible task.

And aside from Ari’s bleeding mouth, it seemed he had other injuries. He was a werewolf-image hybrid. Was he hiding them

with his mana?

Nero guided Ari on my back as carefully as possible. Luckily, the rules weren’t clear. Probably because Bradley knew that no other alpha would help Ari on a normal day. He also knew that my pack was out on a mission and that Aidan was in another realm.

If I didn’t come tonight, what would have happened to Ari? I didn’t even want to imagine.

I started to run with him on my back. He was lighter for an alpha.

“What’s this? An alpha helping someone like me? Is this the end of the world?” Ari asked, his voice was hoarse and lacked that usual fierceness.

“You talk as if you’re not an alpha yourself.”

He laughed although for some reason, it sounded miserable in my ears. “Right. I’m an alpha. I almost forgot. Why are you helping me, Sebastian?”

The sound of my name on his lips plus the feel of his body on my back made my cock twitch. This certainly was not the time nor the place to tell him I like him. He was already wary of others. I didn’t want him to think I had other agendas.

“You don’t get to decide when you will die, Shorty. That no longer depends on you alone. You have mates.”

“Right. One of them wants to possess me. The other one hates that I exist. The last one wants to get rid of me.”

His voice sounded… lonely.

“I don’t hate you, Ari. You were… a surprise in my life, yes, and you piss me off so much that I want to strangle you sometimes. But I don’t think I truly hated you.”

He didn’t get to hear it anymore. He fell asleep on my back. No one else spoke as I finished the two-hour punishment. The students cleared the way as I strode back to our dorm.

I was in the middle of laying Ari on his bed when I heard an explosion somewhere which only meant that Aidan was back. And he had heard what happened to our mate.

I looked outside the window where I could see the building where Bradley’s office was located. The left part of it was now destroyed as two werewolves on the second floor fell on the ground while still attacking each other. The students who were about to leave after watching Ari’s punishment all returned with popcorn and drinks.

I shook my head and came back to Ari’s bed. No one was going to win the diel anyway. The three of us sparred too many times before whether in human or in our wolf forms. And each time, the result was a draw. When our darkness was too much and we were lost in a haze, our targets were each other although some thought of it as too bloody and merciless to be called a simple sparring.

I took Ari’s boots off and wiped the blood off his mouth before checking for other injuries. There weren’t, although his wolt was wincing which convinced me that even in his sleep, his mana was still intact. It was very impressive and worrying at the same time.

“Where is home?” he uttered in the middle of his sleep, in the saddest voice I had ever heard.

He seemed restless and so was his wolf. My feet turned back. I was sitting on his bed before I knew it. I held his hand and finally came to understand why Aidan did it every night, why he looked peaceful even if he was sitting on the rug uncomfortably.

No discomfort could match this peace that immediately washed over me.
