Chapter 167

(Ari)

“Tell us the truth, Gray. You are cursed, aren’t you?”

The alphas sitting with me, including those who were at other tables, laughed at the question from some drunken asshole who couldn’t hold his liquor. I was being watched, I just didn’t know who. Even if I was granted the freedom to leave the Academy, I couldn’t visit the place where dad was buried.

His death anniversary was just around the corner. And I had so much to tell him. But it was too risky. That was how I ended up going with these morons. Nero invited me to join them after I was done book hunting about abolishing mate bonds. I’d bought all sorts of books from the store through Aidan’s card plus a set of daggers. I put them in Nero’s car who accompanied me and treated me to a sumptuous lunch because like me, he had no home to go back to.

A pity, really. Nero had a family but not a home.

My personality sucked. And to think he still preferred my company over his family only proved that they were garbage.

Nero may be an alpha but these days, he felt more like a comrade. I still didn’t trust him, but he didn’t feel like a threat unlike others. My hackles didn’t rise each time I would see his metallic shirt, tattoos, and red hair. Maybe it was because we had a few similarities. The students looked at us strangely. We were both loners although I enjoyed my own company. He obviously didn’t, because he kept hanging around with me. Nero elbowed me, reminding me with his frantic eyes that I was required to answer the second-year moron’s question. Nero told me his name, but I didn’t bother to remember. Why complicate things? He was simply moron two in my head. Morons three to one hundred were still laughing as I sipped on my beer.

“You are right,” I replied, giving them the answer they wanted to hear. “In fact, the last alpha who messed with me became blind. The one before him suffered a worse fate.”

Their laughter faded.

“Is it true? Did he… die?” Moron three paused kissing his woman just to ask that.

I nodded. “He did want to die after I dealt with him.”

“Why? What happened to him? And what did he do?”

That question was from moron four.

“He made fun of my eyes and told me I was cursed.” I gave them a sympathetic smile. “So, I made him realize what being cursed really meant. He became unable to perform after that. His dick went limp.”

“You’re lying!” all the morons accused.

I put down my beer. “Do you want to find out whether I’m lying or not? We can try it tonight.”

Nero’s eyes widened in alarm. “Ari!”

They saw the sparkle in my eyes. Moron two shivered visibly. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down before he grinned at me.

“No need. I won’t waste my time on such useless activities when I have this gorgeous babe on my lap.”

Said babe giggled. It was forced. Of course, they couldn’t tell. Like I said, they were morons who were too damn proud and too damn pleased with themselves that they couldn’t see the truth.

Nero brought me to the biggest alpha exclusive club in the province with betas who immediately welcomed and entertained us. Some of them were up there on the stage, strip dancing.

After the rigorous training, they said they needed to blow off some steam. Hence, the women on their laps. Even Nero was flirting with another dancer. Almost all of them were making out in front of me.

women here? We can call some-”

“No need for that. Ari is saving his virtue for someone special. He told me that himself.”

That response came from Sebastian who was still panting as he glared at Nero. The poor guy moved to a different table as the newcomer invited himself to sit beside me. Because of his intimidating presence, the students began moving to a different table. Some hit the dance floor just to avoid him and his menacing wolf while the others started guiding the betas to the second floor where all the darker and nastier things happened.

I frowned. “Why are you here?”

Sebastian wiped the sweat off his forehead. “What do you expect? I heard that my mate is in a club, filled with men and women. Of course, I would be here. If Aidan heard about this, this would have been this club’s last night to operate.” He glared back at me. “You don’t look happy to see me. Why? Are you planning to cheat on me, Shorty?”

I wrapped my fingers around my beer, imagining it was his neck. “You mean you had me followed?”

“I had you protected, Ari,” he corrected in a defensive tone, looking anywhere but me.

Protected? I was rattled the whole day because of his pack. I thought I’d been traced by House Lemadon.

Sebastian snatched my beer from me and drank on the very place where I put my mouth on. An indirect kiss. My throat went dry at the sight.

“I could have accompanied you to the bookstore myself or to the sword and knives shop. Visiting my pack is not an urgent matter anyway.”

“And so does book shopping.”

“I wanted to be with you.”

“I didn’t.”

There was an uncomfortable silence between us before he spoke in a lower voice, “You really are cruel, aren’t

you?”

“Thank you. You should learn it too. It’s a life skill.”

Sebastian looked hurt. I tried not to be reminded of the way he held me the entire night, of the way I shared a bed with an alpha for the second time without vomiting. I woke up feeling a bit better today. This morning, he invited me to come with him and I turned him down.

‘I want to be alone.

Those words shut him up. Sebastian and Aidan had already gotten past my initial walls. Spending more time with them was dangerous to my mental and emotional health. I’d seen omegas who hoped for better lives with the alphas who bought them, who still foolishly believed in their promises despite the way Grigor and his enforcers treated us.

In the end, their buyers returned them to House Lemadon, calling them defective products. And when they came back, they were never the same again. They were already broken before the auction. After spending time with their buyers, they were worse. They looked dead inside, completely beaten up by life.

The waitress approached our table, cutting off all my thoughts. “Would you like me to get you more drinks, alphas?”

Her smile was seductive as she bent down low enough for us to see that she wasn’t wearing a bra underneath. Sebastian didn’t even glance at her chest and just growled at her especially when she turned to me to ask.

“Fuck off,” he growled. “He is off-limits. We’ll call you when we need something.”
