Chapter 179

When you are with your fated mate, you will gain something that no money can buy. It’s that priceless, Dad said as he carried me on his back in the middle of the night.
He woke me up when I was having a nightmare and invited me for a night stroll. But because he knew that my nightmare often made me sweaty and weak, he carried me.
‘Gain’ I asked sleepily. ‘What’s that?’
‘Peace in your heart. In your very soul. Many people nowadays live without that. That’s the reason why there’s war, sweetheart, why the wolves become feral. Because they don’t have that within them. Some even travel the whole world to find that and die failing.’
My eyes widened. ‘It’s that important?’
‘Yes. That’s why I wish you find peace, Alexandra. But if you can’t, I hope you find the person who will help you find it.’
‘What even is that? Can it be worn?’
He laughed. ‘No, sweetie. It can only be felt. When you meet your mate, you will understandl-‘
‘I have you, dad,’ I cut him off, no longer sleepy. I didn’t know why but I felt alarmed. ‘I don’t need anyone else.
I heard Dad cough. He had been coughing more and more lately.
And, in a low voice, he said, ‘But I’m not going to be with you forever, sweetie.
‘Put me down, dad.’
‘No.’
I knew he was crying. His shoulders always did that thing when he cried. They shook.
‘Pretty please?’
He always gave in after I used that sweet voice on him.
He sighed. ‘You’re one cunning little girl.
Dad put me down. I turned to him and tiptoed so I could see his face clearer under the full moon. ‘Why are you crying, dad? And why are you saying that? Didn’t we promise that we’ll always be together? I don’t need a mate. I only need my daddy.”
I didn’t mind even if other kids mocked me for only having a dad. Those kids were stupid. They didn’t understand that dad was everything to me. He cooked for me like their moms did. In fact, I once stole their lunchbox out of curiosity. They boasted how it was the best in our town because their moms prepared it, but when I had a taste, I had to surrender the lunchboxes.
I loved food so much. I wasn’t even picky, but theirs was just awful. Even pigs wouldn’t like that. Wasn’t giving that kind of food a form of child abuse too? Or animal cruelty since their kids are like that? Animals?
Dad told me to stop referring to them like that though, but it was the truth. They were violent and cruel to me like wild
animals.

My dad cooked better than their moms. He made the best chicken sandwich. He styled my hair better than their big sisters. He read me books unlike their drunk dads. Honestly, those kids were just jealous.
They didn’t have a dad like mine that’s why they cut me off whenever I tried boasting about him.
‘Dad? Why aren’t you talking? Wait for me to grow just a bit bigger, okay? I’ll find a job. You won’t have to work anymore. I’ll provide for us. Leave all the money problems to me when I’m big enough. I’ll take care of you.’
He smiled fondly. ‘You will?’
I nodded. ‘That’s my plan. I’m ten now. Wait for a few more years, okay?’
His smile became brighter. ‘Okay.’
‘You’ll always stay with me? Promise?’
‘Daddy loves you very much, sweetie,’ he whispered instead. ‘Your existence made this old man’s life happy. You gave me a reason to live. I am happy because of you. Because you exist’
‘I love you too, dad’
I was too caught up in wiping his tears that I forgot he didn’t make a promise with me. When he died, I knew why. Dad was honest until the end.
He never made promises he knew he couldn’t keep.
I didn’t want to open my eyes. I knew what day it was today even without looking at the calendar. I always had that same dream on the day of his death anniversary. If I had that dream, it meant I was alive. And I was tired facing the day without him.
It had been years, but that image of him lying on the road lifeless was still in my mind. The officers said that his body had grown suspiciously weak, that he was one of the best enforcers in his time, that’s why they wondered why his body gave out just like that. He collapsed on the road on his way home and didn’t wake up anymore.
Because of that, our neighbors became fully convinced that I was cursed. That I lost my mom because of me and that it was because of me too that’s why I lost dad,
If only I wasn’t cursed… would he have been alive?
“Dad…” I sobbed. “I’m sorry, I miss you so much.”
I was startled when I felt arms wrapped around my back protectively.
“It’s alright. I’m with you.”
I knew that voice.
Aidan.
He was here? He found me?
“We’ are with you.”
That was from Sebastian.
When I opened my eyes, instead of the detention room, I found myself on top of Aidan in the prettiest, biggest, and

probably the most elegant room I’d ever been to. Aidan was lying at the center of the bed, his arms covering me. He planted a kiss on my hair.
“Hush. You are okay now, Ari. You’re not alone. And you are the best thing that ever happened to me.”
On my right, I felt someone take my hand.
Sebastian.
