And I missed being a mother. I had my son. He was still and would always be the best son I could have asked for. But there would always be a place in my heart that would keep weeping for his sister, for the daughter that I lost.
My chest throbbed as I listened to the stranger’s voice. The aching there, the sadness, the yearning, I could relate to all of them very much.
She must be a young woman. The loneliness in her voice struck something inside me. “Where are you from, young lady? Can I call you again?”
“No. You’re lucky I was in the mood to answer today. I’m normally lazy.”
She was saying that and yet, her voice crumbled. The way she talked reminded me of myself, it was like we were old friends. My uncles were often frustrated because I talked to them the way she was talking to me now despite our clear age difference.
Despite the heaviness within me, I was somewhat amused.
“Please?”
“Well, since you’re asking nicely…” she cleared her throat. “Fine then. But don’t take advantage of it, okay? If you do find your daughter, just keep it to yourself. Because if you tell me, I might get jealous about others having families, about them having parents who were alive and cared for them when I have none.”
I didn’t know her but God, I wanted to be that kind of parent, that kind of mother to her. Why did I want to see her? Why did I find myself caring for her? Why did I want to search for her and embrace her? Was this simply because I was missing my daughter?
“You will be okay. I will pray to the Moon Goddess that-”
“No, thanks. But I do appreciate the effort, ma’am. The goddess isn’t real. Where I came from, she doesn’t exist. Or maybe she has a hearing problem.”
I was once like that too.
Until I met Creed.
She laughed. The sound was so sad it did something to my heart.
*Can you please tell me where you are right now?”
“Wolf realm. I gotta go now. I don’t know if my greetings will mean anything to you but… happy birthday, ma’am. When my dad was still alive, he taught me this one thing. It’s kind of silly but he said to whisper your heart’s wishes and desires to the wind. The wind will then whisper it to the universe and make them come true. It didn’t work on me but maybe it’ll work on you. Since I don’t pray, I’ll just wish you find your daughter. I’ll whisper it to the wind for you. The wind is blowing softly right now. Close your eyes.”
I did.
I heard her whisper.
I choked back a sob when I heard her earnest voice. How could someone I’d never met, someone who was thousands of miles away affect me this much?

“There Did you hear it?”
I nodded even if she could not see me. “I did.” I felt it too. “Thank you.”

She was a strange kid. Despite her obvious grief, she was… comforting me in her own way when it should be the other way around.
The wind gently blew in my direction, and I spread my arms to welcome it, imagining my youngest child and her bright smile.
The stranger had already ended the call when I realized that my enchanted device was only supposed to reach the people within the dragon realm. My device was crafted specifically for me by the mages. It matched the mana that I possessed. Speaking to others from another realm using this was impossible unless there was a soul bond or blood and mana connection that only belonged to mates and to… families.
I could not link with Creed or with our son when they were traveling in different realms, but I could call them with this device.
My chest pounded.
