(Kairos)

“I am giving you one last chance, August. Tell me the truth. Where is she?!”

Never in my nightmares did I think this would happen again. That I would be placed into the same situation after eighteen long years. Had it not been for Aurelia who knocked on my door at dawn a year ago, frantically telling me that she had a vision about me, I would not have been standing here.

Committing the same sin.

Again.

‘What have you done, Kairos? Who is the silver-haired woman with purple eyes that aims for you and Leonardo’s life?’ Aurelia gripped me on my shoulders. Her eyes wide in terror. ‘What have you done to her that earned that much wrath? Who is she? And why is she so strong?’

I could swear to gods and goddesses that had I known the dragon princess would live, I would have confessed the truth. Had I known she would have made it, I would have brought her to the Blacks. They would have pardoned us as long as she was alive.

But I found out too late.

My sister’s vision came seventeen years too late.

‘I-I will fix it,’ I vowed to her. ‘D-don’t worry about it, sister. I will-‘

You are telling me not to worry?’ Aurelia shivered. ‘If only that was so simple, Kairos. You still do not understand, do you? Once a vision appears, there is no force in this world that can alter it or stop it from happening. It will happen. She will come for you and my nephew.

Leonardo did not know yet. He had no idea why her aunt would look at him, at me, with such profound sadness and grief as if she was certain she would lose us, her only family.

A vision was a ninety-eight percent guarantee of the future.

But I would bet on that remaining two percent.

If I found the princess first and coaxed her, maybe if I took her first and then presented her to the dragon royals without speaking the truth, I could prevent that future from happening.

That was why I sent my most competitive and capable mage soldier to search for princess Mari. August Gray. Back then, I did not think that he had a gift or that he would dare conceal it from me. It was the ability to look into someone’s past. I had no idea that when I sent August to train Leonardo, he had already seen my son’s filthiest parts, that when I summoned him for the task, he had already known about the tragedy that occurred eighteen years ago. Worse, I did not know that he had already met the dragon princess through his best friend, Fabio Reese.

But he failed to hide his expression from me when I told him about her which made me suspicious and so I sent him away for the task and had my other soldiers trail him in secret.

August was sharp. A few months after I released him for the mission, his traces disappeared. He must have discovered that my men were spying on him. He returned forty-two days ago without the princess, saying he failed to find her in the wolf realm. I did not buy that crap, especially when I learned that the crown prince Aidan McAllister was also looking for him.

I locked him up, terrified that he might confess what he knew. August was beaten. He could no longer open his left eye.

However, I could still see the rebellion in his other eye as he glared at me as if he had stopped seeing his master in me.

‘And what will you do to her? Hurt her again?’ he scoffed. ‘As if I would let you hurt Fabio’s treasured daughter.”

‘She is not your best friend’s daughter! Mari is the dragon princess-”

“Fuck that! Fabio raised her. Whatever you say, he was still her father. And I helped raise her. That makes me her uncle too. Besides, you didn’t care either even if she was the dragon princess, did you? You and your son still hurt her despite knowing that! You abandoned her! The kid suffered because of you!”

“That’s why I am planning to make things right-”

“By scheming more? By lying more? Fuck you, Kairos! You will never find her first.” August grinned through his bloody teeth. “Did you think I would come back here without a plan? By now, I’m sure Creed Black is on his way to her. Good luck with that-”

“Enough!”
