Chapter 31
Chapter 31
(Eli)
“Oh, God.”
I’d already sensed that something was wrong when only the three of them showed up this morning. But I could never guess that the situation was this bad.
Silver saw me first. She snarled and charged at me, her claws ready to tear me in pieces. I stepped back, unable to believe that she was the same fierce girl with the lip piercing that I first met fifteen days ago.
Her body slammed against the glass wall so hard I felt sorry for her. She screeched. Her fists pounded violently against the wall. Silver was a friend until we started losing her. The five of us meet every three days. We even made a group chat where we sent each other important to trivial messages through the new phone that Creed gave me as a gift.
Silver began making excuses, saying she was helping her brokenhearted cousin. She still refused to tell us that it was her who was having a problem. She declined our calls too.
“What happened to her?” I asked as Silver suddenly plopped down on the tiled floor and started wailing as she pulled her hair so harshly that she’d lost many strands.
If she wouldn’t stop right now, she might turn bald.
“Silver had a heat and found out that Leo, the guy she told us about before, was her fated mate. For female shifters, we’ll only recognize our mates when we are in heat,” Shanty explained as she roughly brushed her tears away. “For males, they knew it the first time they scented the women. She found out that it was the reason why Leo doesn’t want to be with her during her heat.”
“Because he doesn’t want Silver to find out?” I supplied. Lizbeth nodded. “But why?”
“That son of a bitch said he’s still in love with his ex,” Carmie answered. “He rejected her.”
My eyes widened in shock. “Mates can do that to each other?”
“Only very few people could do it. Fated mates are highly encouraged to stay together although they can still reject each other. As a consequence, it’ll bring severe pain to both of them. Some recover from the bond rejection and as you can see, some don’t.”
“Where is Leo now?”
“That scumbag ran away after rejecting Sil. He only used our friend. He better pray our paths don’t cross again or else I swear I’m going to castrate him when I see him!”
I bit my lower lip. “Mate bonds are scary.”
Silver was now screaming for Leo’s name while slamming her head against the wall, desperately calling for him. Her head started bleeding, but she didn’t seem to mind.
“I’m so sorry, Leo. I’ll be good. Just please don’t do this to me. Take me back,” she begged before staring back at me. Her hands were back on the wall. “Do you know my Leo? Please bring him back to me. I-I promise I’ll change. I won’t complain about being second anymore.”
I put my hands on the wall as well, matching her. My chest tightened. “No, Silver. Please don’t do that. You don’t deserve to be anyone’s second. You are too precious, too cool, and too damn pretty for that. You ought to be anyone’s one and only.”
I didn’t know Silver for a long time, but she had this strong personality that intimidated me. Lizbeth may appear the most violent in the group, but Silver had this quiet strength in her that I admired. Seeing her become like this was painful.

Chapter 31
S vouchere
Shanty and Carmie stayed with her in the center for feral shifters to talk to her guardians. As we stepped out of the center, Lizbeth slid behind the wheel.
“Will you come with me?” she asked before starting the engine. “If you say no, it’s alright. I won’t take it against you. I’ll drop you off at Creed’s.”
She gripped the stirring wheel. Her shoulders were tense. She’d been like that throughout our time inside the center.
“Do you need me there?” I answered instead.
She looked away. And I understood why. For someone so strong, it was hard for her to admit that she needed someone. “Yeah.”
“Then let’s go.”
“You’re not going to ask me where I’m taking you? What if I end up torturing you there?”
I smiled. “You won’t. Black’s not going to forgive you.”
He wanted to be the one to torture me himself. Knowing that his sister beat him to it, he wasn’t going to like it. The night I gave Creed access to half of my body, I’d wake up to him sucking my breasts every morning, making me come before he left for work and doing the same all over again after dinner.
I should be over the moon. I signed the divorce papers the day after the foundation party and last week, I heard that Landon had signed it as well through whatever method Creed used. I was just waiting for it to be finalized and then I’d be free.
But something was still bothering me. Landon was a demon. He wouldn’t sign the papers without a backup plan. He wouldn’t simply let go of his obsession.
In fourteen days, I’d get to hold my mom again. We wouldn’t have to worry about money again. That’s why I didn’t understand where this reluctance was coming from. And then there was this problem with Silver.
I only remembered I was with Lizbeth when she lightly squeezed my hand. “Thanks for trusting me, Eli.”
Trust. Yes. That must be it. I still couldn’t trust a lot of things, but I knew I could trust Creed’s sister.
“I saw your reaction when you heard about mate bonds. You were terrified,” she said, eventually breaking the silence between us. “You must be confused. Are you sure you still don’t want to ask about it?”
I didn’t. I didn’t want to know anything. I didn’t want to be curious. Curiosity would lead to many things.
And I didn’t escape Landon only to be tied to someone else, no matter how good that ‘someone’ made me feel night and day.
