Claimed By My Husband's Enemy novel Chapter 32

Chapter 32

Chapter 32

(El)

If I allowed myself to feel anything on a deeper level only to be hurt or betrayed again in the end, I had a feeling I might not survive it this time. That I might turn out just like Silver.

They said that everything about fated mates felt like a gift. It was special because a mate was not given to just anyone. It didn’t seem like that way to me anymore. Seeing Silver made it feel more like a curse than a gift.

Instead of answering Lizbeth, I bit my lower lip.

But she proceeded on tormenting me when she started saying, “There are two kinds of mates, Eli. “Mate by choice and mate by fate. Those of us who don’t have mates choose to marry people by choice. Believe it or not, fated mates are different. Our mother said that everything about it is magical. It makes you feel special because it means the Moon Goddess took time finding that one missing piece that will complete your soul while a mate by choice is a work in progress. It may guarantee security, but not the kind of contentment you can only find in your fated half. That’s why everyone wish to have that in their lives.”

“That’s bullshit, don’t you think? If that was true, then Leo wouldn’t have done that to Silver. If a mate is supposed to complete someone, then why was she not enough?”

Lizbeth became dead serious. “That’s what I planned to find out today. Shifters are aggressive by nature. We could only curb the aggression through our mates, fight the dark side in us, and allow us to feel more than just anger. That’s how it’s always been for the longest time.”

I shrugged. “It must be the opposite for Leo. If he still chooses to stay with his ex, then his love must have been stronger than fate itself. Don’t you think a mate by choice is better? For me, it has its own appeal too. I mean falling for someone, being with him despite anything, and staying with him all by choice, not by whatever shit fate dictates you to, sounds more genuine and more romantic to me than a fated mate.”

“You can have that too, Eli.” She smiled, suddenly looking hopeful. “If you and my brother chose to stay with each other despite belonging to different realms, then it’ll be one powerful bond. Because both of you wouldn’t be just mates by fate but also mates by choice.”

I sighed. “You know I can’t stay here, Liz. Your brother also didn’t ask me to.”

It looked like Lizbeth wanted to argue. Thankfully, we had already arrived at some sort of… warehouse? It was the only thing I could see in the area.

Both of us slid out of the car. I just shrugged and followed her. She must have wanted to shift. I read that when their emotions are all over the place, they shift and run to let off some steam.

There were two guys at the entrance who opened the old, rusty gate for us, and then left the two of us inside.

Oh, wait. There were two more people. A guy and a girl. Both were tied on a chair. The guy was sporting a black eye and a busted lip. His expression remained neutral upon seeing us while the girl just stared at us with that guarded look in her eyes.

My jaw dropped when Lizbeth grabbed a baseball bat. Only then did it become clear to me. “That’s Leo… and his girl, right?”

The way my friend turned into a total gangster as she smacked Leo’s abdomen with the bat just proved my hunch. He didn’t even flinch after that blow. He was about to get beaten again when I stopped Lizbeth by the arm.

“What’s that red dot on his forehead?” I asked, trying to buy the guy some time to think rationally and explain himself before my friend made today his last day on earth. “And why does the girl beside him look like that?”

“Like what? And what red dot are you talking about?”

At first, I thought Lizbeth was just playing a prank on me. But she truly looked puzzled. I glanced at the girl again. Half of her face was skeleton, the other half was red. She must have known what I was talking about because she stopped sobbing as fear clouded her eyes. Strange. She didn’t look this afraid a while ago.

“Don’t tell me you’re hungry? That must be why you’re imagining things. This isn’t the time for it, Eli. I’ll feed you later-”

“No. It’s there.”

To prove it, I stepped closer and pointed at the dot. I was stunned when I was able to brush it off with my fingers although the ink or whatever red was smeared on the girl’s face was impossible to remove. Was today their Halloween or something? But why did it look so real?

Leo blinked twice and began coughing black blood although his eyes seemed clearer now.

Blood was still dripping down his mouth as he turned to us, looking dumbfounded. “Lizbeth? What in the world is going on? Why are we here? And why am I tied?”

“Do you think I’d just let you go after you destroyed my best friend?”

“Do you mean Silver? Why? What happened to her?” Concern flashed in his eyes and something else. Something close to… devotion?

“She is suffering because of you, you crazy bastard! All because you chose this woman!” Lizbeth pointed at the sobbing girl with her baseball bat.

“Who are you talking about?”

Leo took one glance at the girl beside him and frowned. “Candice? Why are you here too?” And then he turned back to Lizbeth. “Wait. Is she the woman you were saying? I think there’s been a misunderstanding here. I would never betray your friend, Lizbeth. I would never do that to my mate.”

Candice shuddered; her entire face and body had turned to red. Her eyes started bleeding black blood followed by her nose, mouth, and ears. I stepped back, my fingers stinging. I gasped when I found out that there was blood there too. And it was black.

“What’s happening, Liz?” I reached out to hold her hand, but she evaded me and looked at me with eyes full of fear and… suspicion.

“I should be the one asking you that. Black blood is a sign of witches. I tried to ignore the fact that you weren’t affected by the Romualdez River. And now this happened.”

“What do you mean?”

“There are only four of us here, Elianna. Three are obviously shifters and just one outsider. When you touched them, they started convulsing and becoming like that. Who the hell are you, Elianna Dawson? Is that even your real name?”

My forehead creased. “What are you talking about?”

“You are a witch, aren’t you? Only witches could do what you did.”,

“What the heck? Are you fucking serious right now?”

The fear that I hadn’t felt in a week resurfaced. And it tripled this time around.

“Were you behind Silver’s misery? Did you plan this? Who are you going to hurt next? Me? My daughter? My brother? I knew something was strange when we can’t feel your presence each time you’d come to meet us. But I gave you the benefit of the doubt because of Creed. Did you plan this with the humans? I knew it! Humans and witches can never be trusted!”

Lizbeth strode towards me, but I didn’t like the way her expression darkened. I took another step back. She followed. My gun

was telling me to run. And so I did.

But before I reached the gate, I felt something hard hit the back of my head.

As I collapsed on the ground, I realized how much of a fool I had been.

My world was crushing.

I got hurt again.

I was betrayed again.

All because I made a mistake of trusting again.
