Chapter 41
Chapter 41
(El)
‘Eli was here.’
Two days before my departure, I started marking things. I carved those three words in the lower part of the headboard, needing to leave something behind. The carvings were so small that anyone who would use this room, particularly this bed, would hardly notice it unless they had so much time to burn.
I’d prepared my suitcases, fought my fears and went shopping to buy a couple of things for my mom yesterday. I used one of the gold bars for her shoes, dresses, and a few pieces of her jewelry.
Easton sold off all our mother’s jewelry, including her own engagement and wedding ring when our family business fell apart. None of the two men thought about replacing it with their huge monthly allowance from Landon. They would rather use the money to satisfy their gambling addiction than think about buying even a single rose for mom. My sacrifices as Landon’s wife put money on their table and gave them allowances I didn’t even have. I did those for mom, and they didn’t even stop to think about her.
I’d always believed that she would have recovered faster if only they spent more time with her. But those walking red flags did the opposite. There were rumors that mom’s husband was dating girls young enough to be his daughter. That scumbag. If only I could process their divorce papers by myself, I would.
Mom deserved so much better. She was the best. She just sucked at choosing men like she did to my biological father and her current husband. And I must have inherited that because I also sucked when choosing a husband of my own.
Where the hell was Black when I was making those wrong decisions in my life? He should have showed up back then.
But then again, would anything change?
We were still two people from two different worlds. Sadness washed over me. Creed was summoned by the council today. Now that he was not here, my emotions were all over the place.
The silence was interrupted by the phone call from one of the two guards stationed at the gate.
“Miss Elianna, the crown prince is here. Should we send him in?”
I took my dagger from the bedside table before answering, “Did he tell you the reason why?”
A different voice replied, “I’m just bored. I came to ask how you’ve been doing. Can I bother you for a bit, Elianna?”
As if I had a choice. Making Terrence wait at the gate was considered a big offense already. I sighed and I made sure he heard it. “Fine. Come in.”
He chuckled, amused. “Gee, thanks.”
I didn’t know what the guy was up to, visiting when his friend was not even here. Whoever said that all older people were matured?
Those who said that surely hadn’t met these ancients yet.
I waited for him by the shore. After being stuck in that warehouse with Lizbeth, I learned my lesson. I didn’t want to be alone with any of them anymore. Especially with the prince. With this, the guards could see us from here and could report to their alpha boss.
“Your bestie is here, Black,” I informed him through text.
“Do you mean my car? That’s impossible. I drove it here.”

For someone supposed to be in a meeting, he replied too fast.
“I’m talking about a real person, Black. Not a thing.”
“I don’t have one.”
“Ever heard the saying, ‘the more you lie, the more you age?’ Your prince is here.”
“I’m pretty sure you just invented that one, Vicious. What the fuck is he doing there anyway? Don’t let him in.”
“I can do that to a prince? Won’t I get imprisoned for being rude?”
“Of course you will be imprisoned. But that is only if you are a werewolf. Luckily, you are not. Our laws do not apply to you.”
“Damn. You should have remembered to tell me that sooner. Gotta go. I can now see him walking towards me. Don’t worry. I’ll tell him you said hi.”
“The fuck? Tell him to leave.”
“Answer the phone, Vicious.”
“Goddamn it. I’m calling the guards right now.”
I giggled after reading his multiple messages. I wouldn’t risk answering his calls knowing that Terrence could hear me with his superb hearing skills. He lifted his sunglasses and shook his head in amusement when he saw me bow.
“I’m impressed. No one had exerted this much effort to welcome me.”
I grinned. For some reason, the discomfort and anxiety I thought I would feel was gone. I couldn’t fear him the way I feared the other shifters. Even with Dale, I was back to being alert. The odd sense of comfort I felt around Terrence was the same with Emma who visited me the other day.
“I know, right?” I dropped on the sand. “Please have a seat.”
“Thank you?”
I giggled when the crown prince sat on the sand, disregarding his custom-made suit. Why was he friends with Creed? He should be besties with me instead. I felt like we would have clicked more although with the huge age gap between us, it was going to be hard at first. But it was possible.
“I heard you were sick.” Terrence shot a glance at the dagger I didn’t bother hiding. “You must be feeling better now to plot my murder.”
I shrugged. “After being constantly threatened, can you blame a girl for preparing a little?”
“I guess not. I also heard about what happened between you and Lizbeth. How are you coping so far?”
“Black helps me a lot. You shouldn’t tell him that though.” I grabbed my dagger. Warmth flooded my chest as I lazily traced the carved word with my fingertips. “Black was the one who gave me this.”
Terrence scanned my expression. “You seemed happy about it. Normally, girls would run away when men give them knives. But you seem to love yours.”
Did I?
“I never claimed to be normal,” I said instead. “So, what brought you here, your highness?”
“With everything going on, I thought I would drop by and make sure you are not planning a war.” He laughed. “Seriously, I was worried although seeing you like this took me by surprise. Good thing you are a fighter, Elianna. I thought you would

either be depressed or cursing the hell out of Creed right now.”
“Wait.” I held up a hand, confused. “I don’t think I’m getting what you’re saying here, your highness. What exactly did you mean by that? What’s going on?”
Terrence’s forehead crinkled. “Why do you look like that? Haven’t you heard it yet?”
“Heard what?”
“About your mother.”
My grip around the dagger tightened. I didn’t think I would like where this conversation was heading. Still, I had to hear it. From the only person who would care enough to tell me about it. “What happened to my mother?”
His frown deepened. “She has been missing for three days now.”
