Chapter 53

(Eli)

When the clock struck at twelve, slowly and quietly, I opened the connecting door between my room and Creed’s. The soft light from the nightstand illuminated the face I couldn’t fall asleep without seeing anymore. It was like a big part of me was completely rebelling against the idea of sleeping in my own bed which was strange.

I’d slept alone for years. It was the only version of freedom that I got to have inside Landon’s mansion. And suddenly, I met this mountain of a man and all my habits changed.

Creed was lying on his king-sized bed topless. Their pack doctor already paid a visit and checked on him, assuring me that their alpha was recovering quickly as well as the rest of the guards who dealt with the rogues. After taking what looked like tonic, he fell asleep. That was six hours ago.

I’d already talked to Dale. Only their alpha suffered the most injuries since he was on the front line. His second-in- command had less injuries. He was still downstairs at the moment along with four more pack enforcers. They were in the living room. Many of them were outside the house, camping. He said it was a prerequisite for every pack especially if their alpha was ill or injured.

The incident happened outside of the province governed by the Black Pack. It was because I insisted on testing my car further away. Had I remained inside their province, inside their town, the rogues wouldn’t have dreamt of doing that since Creed’s pack thoroughly scanned every visitor in their domain.

Dale said that the Black Pack had about three hundred members and one fourth of their pack was outside the mansion. more than half was close by, waiting for any report or signal from Dale in case there were intruders while one eighth of them were still in the middle of their assignment in the human realm.

Dale was beside me as the crown prince returned to check on his friend. Terrence arrived like he promised he would. He took over the investigation and personally came back to deliver the news.

‘You are excused, I remembered the prince telling Dale as he sat in the library in front of me.

The latter politely lowered his head but didn’t make any attempt to move away. Dale remained standing ramrod straight behind my chair with his hands on his back. ‘Pardon me, your highness. My loyalty is in my alpha. And before the incident happened, he considers any man outside of his pack a nuisan-a threat to his relationship with Elianna. Unless I hear straight from his mouth that you are safe to be around his mate, I would stand guard right here’

I could have sworn Dale was about to utter ‘nuisance’. Thankfully, he was able to stop himself before the word escaped his big mouth.

Terrence shrugged. ‘Suit yourself. Can you teach my second-in-command how to be like you, Dale? Train him whenever you have free time Name your price. I’m not asking for a drastic change from him. Just a little more efficiency on his part would do.’

Dale’s nose scrunched. ‘Stefan doesn’t need training, your highness. What he needs is to stop humiliating himself by submitting his resignation.’

Terrence chuckled. ‘You are becoming more and more like the alpha you follow. Creed told me the exact same thing.”

‘Your second-in-command sounds like a major problem. Why do you still let him work for you?’ I asked. ‘You’re the prince and the alpha of your own pack. You could replace him.’

‘He’s the eldest son of Lord Vincent and also the king’s godson. There are some things even a prince can’t do. Unless he willingly leaves his position, he’ll have to stay there.’ Something crossed his eyes, something similar to sadness. ‘Not everyone is as free as you, Elianna.’

While I was still pondering whether I was as free as he talked about, I saw the prince’s other face, the kind which I wouldn’t

wish to be directed to me in the future. Anyway, it’s the Association. Tell your alpha that they are back!

Terrence was courteous enough to explain about the Association to me. Like I expected, greed was everywhere and werewolves were no exception. According to him, there were two kinds of alphas. The first were those who were born with supreme blood and could automatically rule their pack like Creed and Terrence and the second were the betas who had to fight for the alpha position.

62

There were thousands of male werewolves and only less than a hundred of them were supreme alphas. Half of them were in some faraway provinces, enjoying their retirement. In the city, only the King and Terrence had supreme blood and, in this province, only Creed possessed it. The ordinary people, more known as betas, built an alpha research facility a long time ago and made a career out of breaking others. They worked undercover to research about their targets: the supreme alphas.

While humans like Landon wanted to be human-werewolf hybrids out of greed for power, the same thing could be said about the members of the Association in this realm. The betas wanted to be supreme, declaring they were tired just following the supreme alphas’ commands. They wanted to be strong themselves, to mess with their laws, and create a new world where they wouldn’t be followers anymore but rulers.

They would do anything to be one of those alphas even if it meant annihilating their own kind. There were supreme blooded alphas who died because of the betas’ mission. They committed terrorism, eliminated pack members, abducted their alphas, and experimented on them to the point of death. It was a clear scheme to take down the monarch, that’s why the council had once exterminated the Association and burned their facilities although some of their researchers were able

to escape.

The council thought the Association had learned their lesson but the attack in the café and the ambush proved them wrong. It turned out that all those people were involved in the Association. They wanted to take me to get through Creed, the most powerful supreme blooded alpha in his generation.

“There was a reason why supreme blooded alphas are born, Dale added. “To put a leash on those kinds of betas. They were borm betas for a reason. The Goddess must have known about the carnage they would bring out in this realm if she were to make every male supreme. They didn’t only want to rule. They want to destroy. They want bloodbath.’

Who would have thought that Creed was being hunted not only in my realm but in his own territory as well? It must have been so difficult for him, being surrounded by enemies wherever he went.

The humans were after his wealth and connection. The ‘awakened’ men like my douchebag of an ex wanted him for his strength. The betas wanted to use him and his blood. The council wanted him for his excellence, for his skills. The people in this realm wanted him for the protection he and his pack could bring to this land. The women wanted him for his body, his face, and everything he represented.

Who wanted him for the real him? For the real Creed Black?

Not to brag but my beast of a mate had several good qualities other than the things everyone wanted him for.

I laid on the bed beside Creed and buried my face between his neck and shoulder and whispered, “Thank you for today, Black.”

“You are thanking people now? You are becoming soft, Vicious.”

I stiffened and then smiled upon remembering how I used that same line on him before. I felt his arm wrap around my waist. “How long have you been awake?”

“For a while now.”

I smacked him on the chest. “Then why did you pretend to be sleeping?”

He chuckled. “I was wondering what you would do. And frankly, I was disappointed. I was hoping you would steal a kiss.”

After what Creed did today, he deserved more than just kisses. I looked up and found him already staring at me. Here was the man who remained soft on me even when the world had been rough on him. That’s why my heart kept getting attached

whether I liked it or not.

“Everyone in this realm wants you, Black,” I said instead.

“For their own agenda.”

There was a hint of bitterness in his voice. And a trace of loneliness in his eyes before it vanished as if he didn’t want me to see it.

I bit my lower lip. Would he think the same of me? “What about me? If I tell you I want you, what would you say?”

His eyes glowed. In an instant, Creed was on top of me as he devoured my mouth. “About damn time you say it, Vicious.”
