Before I could speak, we heard the wings of the dragons flapping above us. Vanna and the others were up in the air. shrieking as they passed by us. Creed followed where I was looking at.

He didn’t seem shocked, like the sight and smell of burning flesh was not new to him when I could hardly stomach it. “Did you do that, princess?”

“Y-yes,” I croaked.

I was prepared to be judged. I was used to it although being used to it didn’t mean it was less painful every time and so I looked away, afraid to see the judgment in his eyes.

But then Creed lifted my chin, a proud smile curling his mouth as he spoke, “Good job, Vicious.”

Out of all the things I was thinking he would say, those three words did not even cross my mind. He looked incredibly pleased. He hadn’t even heard what made me do it and he didn’t seem to mind.

“How can you say that?” I asked, not feeling very vicious at all.

“They were the ones who put those tears in your eyes, weren’t they? You were too kind. If it were your uncles, those dragons would be in a place where no one can find them. They would be alive, yes, but they certainly would wish they were not. Your uncles have this strange hobby of playing with their food before ravishing them.”

I didn’t doubt that for a second. There was a reason why the dragons were terrified of the king and his brother although I didn’t want to hear the rest of it.

“And if it were you?”

“None of them would be flying by now. That’s for sure.”

Creed did not say how as if he was sparing me the details, but there was darkness brewing in his eyes like he was plotting a hundred and one ways to punish them.

“You can do that?”

Creed shrugged. “I have been learning mana for the past month Just sensing it was not enough for me anymore.”

The dragons all sank into the ocean and stayed underwater for several minutes. When they emerged, the fire was gone. They started ascending, but then Creed motioned his hand and suddenly, Vanna and her squad were burning all over again.

I stared at the alpha, wide eyed. His fire was similar to mine. Crison.

“I heard that it is impossible for werewolves to turn themselves to a hybrid? Something about being unable to serve two masters at the same time.”

“Who said I am serving two masters? There has only been one for me.”

“Who?”

Creed did not answer and just trapped me in his gaze.

“The process must have been very painful. How many days did i take?”

“Seven.”

Seven days of nonstop mental and physical abuse. It was soul consuming. That was how they defined the process. Some even said it would take out all of a shifter’s emotions until there was nothing left in them anymore.

“I don’t understand. Knowing all that, why did you still go through it?” I asked, frowning.

For a moment, I forgot about my own pain as I thought about him.

Once again, Creed was looking at me as if I had the answer. “There was a place I wanted to go to. It can only be reached with mana.”

“Have you reached it? That place?”

What kind of place would be too special for him to risk his life like that? He could have lost himself in the process. He could have failed, but then again, someone like Creed Black, who looked like he had never been weak a day in his life, must not have even thought of the possibility of failing.

“No. Not yet. I don’t have to go there anymore.”

“Is this about the thing you told my uncle you were searching for?”

He nodded.

“Was it worth it?”

Creed nodded. This time, his smile reached his eyes. And I found my heartbeat booming loudly in my ears again.

“Always.”

He leaned closer and lifted me up in his arms. The lack of sleep. the terror from earlier, the mana outburst, all those were taking on me now that I didn’t try pushing him away even when had every reason to be wary of men. Maybe tomorrow, I’d do just that. But not tonight.

Not when being in this man’s arms felt like coming up for air after being underwater for so long that it was making me teary-eyed all over again. I closed my eyes and instinctively presed my face against his chest, not wanting him to keep seeing me in my weakest self.

“Lord Anson said he has prepared another room for you to use ou need to rest,” he said as he started walking.

“Okay” I replied wearily, but when I remembered my bag in the and, I opened my eyes. “Wait! My treasure-”

Creed cleared his throat as if he was concealing his grin. He lifte his shoulder that had my backpack. “Your treasures are safe right here.”

For the past minutes, we were engulfed in silence although this ue, silence neither felt deafening nor threatening. If I would be honest, for the first time in a long time, silence actually telt… comforting.

“Care to tell me what made you roast the dragons?” he asked aft some time.

I glanced at Vanna and her squad. They were still flailing as they tried to remove the fire from their wings. Creed’s mana was

more stable than mine. They were finding it harder to get rid of.

“Is it really important for a child to grow in a complete family?” asked instead.

“I believe so.”

Just like that, my boss bitch moment ended when Vanna and the others paused upon hearing me wail. I could feel their eyes on me as the vulnerable mother in me failed to contain her emotions. All the things that were weighing me down came back, threatening to pull me under again.

“What if my baby ends up hating me one day? Because I don’t want to go back to his daddy.”

“To who?”

“To Landon, my ex, the baby daddy.”

“Bullshit.” Creed stopped walking at once. “What the hell do you need him for? What kind of nasty ideas are they putting in that brain of yours?” He glared at the dragons that were still in the water as if he was thinking of ending them for good. “You are different, Elianna. Your family does not have to consist of you, the baby, and your fucking ex.”

“Then what?”

“Sometimes, it just has to consist of you, the baby, and your guard who will ensure your protection for the rest of your lives: me.”
