Tank POV
The food arrived, and we were seated around the table. We had Stephen, Tandy, Uncle Simon, Blaze, Jenny, Melony, Zero, Savage, Fixer and me, around this large table, napkins, paper plates, forks, and chopsticks for those that could use them, plus drinks, the table felt full, and the conversation, was mainly from Jenny, and her return from two days work, what she had seen, and again a turn in the works helicopter, rescuing some hikers, trapped on a cliff. Dirk was out doing some training with the guys, something about not enough night training.
We let her ramble on, and Melony every now and then added stuff of her own, not that they competed, it flowed, we didn’t want to talk about what went down, today in the club house, we needed to process it all, before discussing it, and having this normal flow of conversation, that had us laughing, and feeling like one large family was great, soon the food was almost gone, talks of saving some for Prez, was a resounding now, as it’s best eaten fresh and hot, one of the foods, we prefer not to have reheated.
There was a small pause in conversation as Zero and Blaze fought over the last of the food.
“Guys, I asked you all here for a reason,” I said, and a tingle of adrenaline ran through my body; all conversation stopped, as all eyes turned to me, curiosity on the faces, the fight, the food stopped, and Blaze took that opportunity of distraction to snatch the plate they they had been fighting over, and poured half onto Zero’s plate and the rest on his own.
“Fixer and I are going to be parents.” There it was out there.
Soon, the room was a rush of bro slaps, congratulations, and hugs for Fixer as she was moved from one set of arms to the next, and for ten minutes, it was lots of questions, kisses, joy, and squealing from the girls.
“Only eight weeks, still very early, but we couldn’t contain our news, and felt that, for security reasons, Stephen and Savage needed to know.
Savage was staring at Fixer’s belly, a small tear sparkled in his eyes, but he held them back from falling. He was going to be a grandfather; he could enjoy our little one growing up and possibly fill the void left by missing Fixers. It’s not much, and can’t replace what was missed, but this might be the news needed to speed along the bonding between them, and hopefully not do the reverse.
The table was cleaned up, we retired to the lounge, and the television was put on, but no one was watching. The girls chatted about silly things, like if Fixer had a girl, then Sticks boy and her girl could get married. Like, who plans things like that? wouldn’t want that pressure on my child. It hadn’t even been born yet, and they were glad that Fixer just laughed at their crazy ideas.
The inevitable started, not long after Jenny and Blaze went upstairs for some catch-up, as Blaze put it, and Zero took Melony upstairs for something similar.
“What are your thoughts on today’s chat with the accountant?” Tandy started tentatively.
“Have you investigated Sheila, her background, other than being Grandma’s friend who died, leaving Grandma to take her in? Like, there are so many lies and confusion, I am doubting so much of what I had heard, learning.” Fixer replied quickly, before we got into a more heated discussion on today’s events.
“Partly, will dig deeper, never doubted the connection before now. Will get onto that. Your grandmother might have been conned, right from the start.” Fixer nodded and snuggled into me, my arm instinctively wrapped around her shoulder, enjoying the feel of her against me.
“Sheila sounds like she was worse than Barry, and could have been behind all your mistreatment, bringing Zoey up as a vindictive child, but together the three of them had somehow managed to dupe the whole town. The hatred goes a long way back, jealousy as a youth, and a partner that could be as bad as each other, they were the perfect couple born from hell.” Uncle Simon sounded so angry, and I wondered if I had missed something in what he was saying.
