Claimed by the Biker Giant (Maxine and Tank) novel Chapter 205

Fixer POV

I ate some chocolate bars and drank water to keep my stomach from eating my insides. Below the apotlights, the area was kept lit, though it was a bit disconcerting to see the light moving as the chopper moved. I could see them busy at work below. Savage’s voice came over the headphones, sometimes talking to me; keeping me focused, he told me to eat and drink, to stay busy, and to share general updates on the changing conditions. His voice was calm and clear. You would think we were out having a joy ride instead of search and rescue. Guess this was nothing compared to what he had seen and been through.

It was draining, watching, my oyos ached, trying to focus on the moving ground, and hoping to see more than possible.

To kill time, they had been sending up unnecessary equipment to lighten the load for the men who would carry the boys back to the base search camp, and even some of the lads’ gear was being loaded up to be left at the hospital for the family to collect later.

We had three boys on board who had fallen asleep. Now they were safe, and had pain relief, and I was preparing for the teacher.

“Lower the cage, ready to send the last one up,” Jenny called out, breaking my train of thought.

I lowered the cage and waited. Bruiser and Dale came up with the cage. I had thought Jenny would, being the medic. I rose the cage, slower than it could go, afraid to make an error; this was life and death in my hands.

“Easy now, Fixer, you’re doing well.” Savage’s voice came over the headset. He was watching our progress and had been warning me not to try to rush bringing the last one up, even though it was tempting.

I could see the branch stuck in the man’s stomach and hoped nothing major had been damaged. It looked awful, but Jenny had done a great job stabilising and supporting the man as much as she could. Bruiser was the first to reach out, and with his strength, pulled the cage into the hold, and Dale grabbed the handrail and assisted once they were partly in; it was like in slow motion, all I could do was wait for them to place their feet to land, and relax the tension on the cage, the men, unclipped their harness and moved the cage towards the bed.

“More slack,” Dale called out as they pushed the cage over and slid the man and cage to one side, securing the cage to the floor.

“Won’t place him in the bed, lest we move him, the letter, Jenny had said.” When they were happy with the man, they moved the bed I had ready for him, grabbed a basket from the wall, attached it to the winch, and took over bringing Jenny and the last of the gear back up, leaving the guys to do whatever they needed to secure what was in the chopper.

Savage called someone advising wo be flying hot, ton, ETA at the hospital, twenty-five.” I moved to check the gear, which was properly secure, and the boys were still sleeping, before checking on the teacher. We had a portable machine that Jonny could attach to him to monitor his heart, but ! was not sure if she would want to disturb all that padding, she had compacted him into the cage. It looked like a lot of work to remove all that paddlig Just to put that monitor on.

“Hold on,” Savage called out, and the helicopter took off, making a quick, tight circle, and headed back to town.

FAST.

I hadn’t realized they could go that quickly, and I found I liked it. Call me a speed freak, but yeah, I like it fast. The town had spotlights all over the place, with men working to place tarps on roofs.

The hospital was lit up, and the generators would be active, keeping people alive. A team was waiting for us to land, and the emotions of seeing the end in sight overwhelmed me, and it took a bit not to let a tear of relief fall. Savage had no sooner landed than Bruiser and Jenny got to work on the teacher, while Dale and I started to unlock the beds for the boys.

The teacher went in a flash; they had lowered his cage and all on the gurney, and took off fast. The boys at least got moved to a gurney, and I got to cleaning the beds, while Dale and Bruiser removed the boys’ bags and placed them for collection.

Once done, I hunted for coffee and brought it back for Savage, Dale, and Bruiser. I handed Savage and Dale theirs and turned to hunt for Bruiser.

I found him, he was holding a young woman in his arms, something I hadn’t expected to see, and I moved towards him.

“He’s fine, a broken leg.” Bruiser was consoling her.

“I don’t know what to do. That big tree, which I had been complaining about, toppled. The house is unlivable. That estate manager is all for himself. He hasn’t done any maintenance on the place in years, yet he appears to be getting richer. Sorry, I don’t know what to do.” The woman was weeping on Bruiser’s shoulder.

“Here.” I offered them both the coffee; I can always grab another for myself.

“Thanks.” Bruiser took them both and handed one to the woman.
