Pip POV
My sister acted exactly as I had expected, full of tears, happy tears. She knew how hard it had
been the past three and a half years, since I started to show, and Richard found out I was pregnant. Richard tried to make me miscarry at one stage, but I shifted to that one–bedroom bungalow, and
he didn’t find me until I had the baby.
What I didn’t expect was Skunk’s mother, a loud woman, scaring my child to bits. She wouldn’t be having him on her lap anytime soon. She might mean well, and it shocked me that she was like that. Skunk tried to warn me that she could get loud when excited, and I now see what he means: She was loud. Too loud. I tried to be polite and offered drinks, letting Dan play with his toys as a distraction. If he is interested, he will come back to sit with us once he sees that they are not going
to shout and cause problems.
Skunk tried to be careful about my history, and that meant a lot to me. If my sister were here with us, she would have blabbed about my whole life, thinking they deserved to know.
So this time, it was me who told the story and filled Skunk’s parents in on some of what my life had been like. I didn’t go into great detail, but enough for them to get the overall picture. I could see Nightingale, horrified at her blunder and guilty that she may have lost a chance to hold her new grandson.
“I am proud of you, son. Taking on a child won’t be easy, but you must be ready to take this step, to have asked Pip.” Dan looked up as if he knew we were talking about him, and moved to my lap, watching Skunk’s Dad with interest. Blaze had a similar voice to Skunk’s, and that might be what has Dan curious.
“Tandy will be here on Friday. Are you staying till the ceremony? Or go back home and come back?” Skunk asked, looking at his mother, because she is in charge of our family, regardless of what it might appear to the outside world, and Dad, who is in charge of our family to the outside world. “Stay, and hope to get to know Pip and Dan if he will allow it.” He looked at Skunk’s Mum when she mentioned his name, then back at the toy he had brought with him.
“We have arranged a room for you. It’s the room Pip stayed in at Doom’s wedding; the room you were in had been taken.” Skunk filled in the details. It was almost lunchtime, and we had exhausted all the questions and answers, avoiding the elephant in the room.
“Can I look around?” Nightingale asked, and Skunk looked at me, making it my decision. “Sure.” Nightingale stood up and walked down the carriage, opened the door to the bathroom, and checked out the two bedrooms. Dan took that as a signal to climb off my lap and go to Blaze, and raised his arms to be lifted. Blaze smiled at the young lad and picked him up, letting him check him

out. Dan touched his face, his beard, and tried to open Blaze’s mouth.
“Ahhhh,” Dan said when he couldn’t pry it open. So Blaze did. It was comical; he was trying to work out why he looked and sounded so much like his Daddy.
“Not Daddy” Dan said, in a huff, still working it out.
“That’s Daddy’s Daddy,” I explained. He looked at Skunk, then back at Blaze, and nodded.
“Yes, granddaddy” Skunk smiled at him.
“Gradaddy,” he said, scratching his nose.
“You can call me Pop. Sounds easier to say.” Blaze beamed at the lad–his first grandchild.
“Pop? Popcorn?” I burst out in laughter, and Blaze looked indignant.
“Just pop, no corn, on me.” He bopped him on the nose, feeling a lot more relaxed with Dan. I could see Nightingale watching, and the longing look on her face, as she slowly approached the table.
“This carriage is well set out. Did you do it, Pip?” Nightingale asked, still staring at Dan, as she took
a seat next to Blaze.
“No, this was all Skunk. I wouldn’t want to change any of it.” I replied. Dan climbed off Blaze’s lap, and moved to Skunk’s, his eyes never leaving Nightingale. It would take till the wedding before he would be comfortable around her, and it was all her own doing. Who in their right mind comes storming in like she did, when she didn’t know the situation? Hopefully, she will learn from this moving forward.
“Great taste, son, I didn’t know you were this creative,” Nightingale praised.
