Chapter 333

Pip POV

Poor Nightingale, she must be freaking out over the operation she has to have. I agree she should

apologise for her outburst, which had to have been eating her up inside, but if we are to move

forward, she needs to make some effort too.

What a way to meet your in–laws for the first time.

Blaze had to have been embarrassed by how things turned out. I like him, maybe because he was a

carbon copy of Skunk.

“Skunk, how did you get your name?” I asked, curiosity getting the best of me.

“We were kids, wanting club names of our own. I think we were eight or nine at the time, and I let rip in the classroom one day, around the time we were trying to find names for each other. Anyway, the teacher asked who brought a skunk into the room. My mates laughed, and so was born my name, Skunk. Sprocket came about because we used to work in the workshop helping Fixer, from time to time, and he mixed up the parts, putting sprockets in the wrong place every time we got a delivery. All the other parts he got right, just the sprockets, so he became Sprocket. Storm was because he loved to go out in the rain and ride his bike through the puddles, making his wheels spin, testing himself all the time, and Doom, well, he was the one to point out what could go wrong. Each time we tried something new on our bikes, he was our doom and gloom guy.” I smiled at how they found the names.

“You don’t mind being called Skunk?” I asked, thinking as an adult, he might have second thoughts.

“I did at first, but then getting a laugh when I explained how I got the name changed my thoughts. It was a fun story, and it never fails to get a laugh from the guys.” Skunk sounded proud of his name, and that’s all that counts. I wonder what they will call me?

We talked for a while, about anything and everything. Skunk was a good listener, laughed along with me, and looked sad when things sounded so good, but he never seemed to judge me, and I feel we had grown a little closer with this heart–to–heart. Clearing the air, so to speak.

Dan was up, and after the bathroom run, he was sitting having a juice when I thought I would bring up the subject of Nightingale.

“Dan, you know how Pop is Daddy’s daddy?” I started slowly, making sure he understood that part first. He nodded his head.

“Popcorn Daddy.” Yeah, don’t think Blaze will lose that one too soon.

“Well, the person you are scared of, that one you call a bad girl. She’s your Daddy’s Mummy.” He looked at Skunk as if to ask whether that was true

* DE PALESTI

“You know how sometimes I get angry or really excited, and I shout out loud.” He nodded, looking at me. You could see the gears working. He does well thinking things through for such a young boy

“Daddy’s Mummy, bad lady,” Dan said, with a frown.

“No, not a bad lady, one that gets too excited and makes a loud noise, like you sometimes do too,

when you get down that tube slide,” Skunk said, making Dan look at him in surprise

“Happy loud?” he asked, still piecing it together.

“Yes, happy loud, but because you don’t know her, you thought it was bad noise.” Skunk was making sense. I hadn’t thought of the slide. He screams with joy when he slides down it. The scream echoes in the tube, and I think that’s the part he loves the most.

“Want to go meet my Mummy? You can call her Nanny,” Skunk said, with a smile.

“Why Nanny and Pop?” I asked, confused by this. I don’t know a pop, and the only Nanny I know was the one who came to babysit, and I thought that was what a nanny was.

“Because we already have Gran and grandma, and her grandmother was called Nanny, and was a lovely lady, I think it was a way of remembering her, and hoping to emulate her, but so far, she isn’t doing so well at that.” Dan hopped off the chair and was ready to get out of here.

“Tube. Park.” He said, with a loud, excited voice.

“Loud voice is for outside, having fun,” I said, making him look at me with the telltale thinking tilt of

his head.

“Scary voice?” he asked. I bet he’s still processing our conversation about Nightingale.
