Skunk POV

Dad was having fun with Dan. Both appeared to be hitting it off, Dad’s huge grin and Dan’s laughter said it all: one down, one to go.

I bit my tongue from saying anything when Pip asked Mum if she was alright. What I hadn’t

expected was mum’s reply.

“Not really. I have some health issues, and it’s getting the better of me. I really am sorry for my outburst when I arrived and scared poor Dan like that. Skunk, will you ever forgive me? I said some things I shouldn’t have, and put all my fears and anxiety on you. Please, I am so, so, so very sorry. It has been eating me up since you left home, and the longer I left things as they were, the harder it was for me to reach out to you and ask for forgiveness.” My heart felt like it was booming out of my chest, and my throat was closing up over a hard lump that was forming in it, my eyes wanted to water, and my emotions were about to burst.

I was saved from replying by Dad and Dan returning, both with red cheeks and glowing with

happiness.

Mum lowered herself to Dan’s level and watched him drink some of the water before he handed

me back the bottle.

Then, in a manner that only Dan could have pulled off, and with ease, he told my mother off for her outside voice used inside, and that it was scary. The emotions that I had been battling to contain trickled down my cheek, as mum accepted being told off, and as much as she wanted to reach out and hold him, Dan turned his back, and the subject, as far as he was concerned, was over.

But I was a bit surprised he went to Dad, who was sitting in the sand, and sat on his lap. Dad’s face lit up like a Christmas tree; you couldn’t get a better reaction from him. If you tried this innocent young lad, humbled a six–foot–six or so, giant of a man, to almost tears, well, he already had me in tears. Today was another emotional day.

“Nuggets?” Dan asked, looking at Pip. It was a little early for dinner for the club members, but I couldn’t see a reason why we couldn’t eat. It was around five o’clock, and the champ burned a lot of energy with Dad.

“Let’s go to the kitchen and see what they have,” Pip suggested, looking at me. What for, support?

“No, out, Macdols.” He huffed, his arms crossed over his chest, like I often do; he was mimicking me already. What a compliment.

“Dad, Mum, care for a McDonald’s snack?” I offered them a chance to be around Dan as much as possible, gaining an arm around my waist from Pip, in support of my effort.

“Sure, been a while since we visited that place,” Dad replied, standing up, with Dan still in his arms.

“Skunk, is it safe?” Pip asked, trembling in my arm.

“Yeah, Richard is still in jail. They didn’t give him bail; from what I heard, there are other items on the arrest sheet, and there’s a restraining order on him to stay away from you and Dan. Dad and I can handle him if he did manage to get out, or ask his buddies to attack either of you,” I said with

confidence. Guess we are spoiling Dan, but he doesn’t ask for much, and is a good kid, it’s nice to

spoil him.

“Hey, Doom, we’re off for Macca’s, want to come?” I called out as Doom passed by with his

Fingers.

“Sure.” They changed direction, and we piled into the club truck, Dad keeping Dan on his lap, the seat belt going over both of them, not sure if that’s legal, but it saved me pulling out his car seat,

and Pip didn’t say anything.
