Chapter 105

“We need to take him to the hospital,” I say firmly, scooping him into my arms.

I rush toward the main door. I swing it open and run straight into two guards.

“Move,” I say, breathless. “He’s sick. We need to go.”

One of them shakes his head. “We weren’t informed of anything.”

“Informed?” I snap. “He’s burning with fever!”

But they won’t budge. Maria grabs my arm. “Arguing won’t help,” she says softly. “Let me call Luca.”

It’s the longest ten minutes of my life. And then Luca arrives.

He reeks of alcohol, eyes bloodshot but he takes one look at Leon and sobers up real fast. He doesn’t say a word. Just walks over, takes Leon from me with surprising gentleness, and strides out the door. I follow without question.

We rush to the hospital. By some miracle, it’s just a bacterial infection. Something treatable. They hook him up to an IV, bring down the fever. By 3 a.m., the colour is slowly returning to his cheeks. The vomiting stops. The breathing evens out. They send us home with medication, and I carry him back to his bed.

Luca stays.

He doesn’t talk much. He just helps. Holds Leon when I get tired, wipes his forehead with a damp cloth, and adjusts the blanket. Maria disappears into the kitchen to make something warm for him. He lost so much-he hadn’t eaten, couldn’t keep anything down.

I do everything I can and finally, after what feels like a lifetime, Leon drifts off to sleep. Peaceful. Breathing easy.

And I sit there beside him, watching the steady rise and fall of his chest.

Luca’s voice brings me back to reality.

“You should probably go shower,” he says gently “Maybe change…. He got sick on you. I’ll watch him.”

I glance down at myself and finally notice the mess, stains on my shirt, and the faint smell of vomit. In all the panic, I hadn’t even realized. All cared about was Leon.

I nod. “Thank you.”

He just nods back, and I turn, walking slowly to my wing.

In the shower, I stay under the water longer than I should. When I finally step out, I towel off quickly and I’m just sifting through my closet for something warm to wear, something simple

to keep me comfortable while I sit by Leon’s side through the night….

A knock at the door stops me.

That must be Maria. I walk over, already worried. No, please don’t let it be Leon again.

I pull the door open. But it’s not Maria.

It’s Luca.

“Luca?” I blink. “What’s wrong? Is Leon okay?”

I feel the panic rising again.

He raises his hand calmly, a small smile on his face. “No, no, he’s fine. He’s okay. I just… I got a call. I have to go.”

“Oh.”

“I left a baby monitor in his room. Thought I’d bring this to you,” he says, holding it out.” Just in case anything happens.”

“Thanks,” I say softly, taking it from him. “I’m just going to finish changing and then… I think I’ll spend the night in his room. I want to keep an eye on him.”

He nods. “Of course. It’s not a problem. I’m just glad he’s doing okay.”

We’re both standing in my room now, him by the door, me halfway to the closet. The room is quiet except for the faint hum of the monitor in my hand.
