I am underneath Asher’s weight. He’s on top of me, and he’s heavy, and the sound of gunshots makes me want to scream, but Asher places his hand in front of my mouth.

Just a second later, the girl we were with started running while screaming aloud, and the sound of gunshots followed her as she ran away from us.

Asher keeps pressing on me for a few minutes, but what feels like hours, until he says, “Shh,” and then he stands up.

He groans a little. I’m about to ask him what’s going on when he makes this communication with his hands, not saying a word as he keeps telling me to shut the hell up.

We start walking, following Luca on the other side of the way from where the girl had run, and just when we’re a few paces away, we hear more screaming, screams of agony before it all goes quiet.

Luca mutters under his breath, “Shit,” and then he starts running.

Asher starts running behind him, pulling my hand forward. We’re running. I don’t know where we’re going, but I’m not supposed to be talking. I’m supposed to be running.

We keep running and running, and I trip and fall.

Asher, who was holding my hand, jerks, but then comes back. I’m about to apologize when he puts his hand on his mouth, telling me to shut up.

He then pulls me in his arms and starts running away with me. Thankfully, just a few minutes later, we reach somewhere, and Luca starts ripping off plants, and underneath, I am so relieved to see it’s a

vehicle.

He opens the door. There’s no need to tell me to get in. I get in the back seat.

Asher sits in the front seat with Luca, and Luca drives off.

Nobody says anything.

Luca keeps driving on a dirt road and after a while, it’s been quiet, nobody’s shooting at us. It’s awkward and tense in the car, and I just can’t take it anymore. So I ask,

“Shouldn’t we have reached that main road already?”

Luca just nods as he says, “We should, but given the ambush on us, we can’t use those roads because. they might be there waiting for us.”

I keep looking outside as I ask, “Where are we going? Are you taking me home?”

Luca shakes his head. Asher says, “No, we can’t go home now. They know the way there and they might be there waiting for us. What we should do right now until our men are all over this is just go somewhere for a while and lay low.”

“Okay,” I say, but then I can’t help it. I have to ask again because I’m super scared. “Are we going to be okay? Are we going to be fine? I mean, they’re no longer shooting at us. We’re fine, aren’t we?” I say, my voice strained, and shaky.

I never had anybody shoot at me before.

Asher turns towards me as he takes my hand, but he groans. He seems to be composing himself. Maybe the shooting affected him more than I thought.

He says, “You’re going to be fine. We are fine, as I told you. You’re not going to die until I marry you.”

He smiles, but his smile is tight.

And then that’s when I look at him and I notice that there’s blood on his hand. I’m not sure it’s blood, but yeah, my brain is all over the place.

I ask him, “Is that blood?”

I ask him, feeling out of place, scared that he was shot and that I’m going to lose him.

“No, I’m fine,” he says as he takes his hand away from me, sits on the seat and looks straight ahead.

But, he looks strained and he’s sweaty. He has sweat all over his face and his hair.

Something tells me that he’s hurt.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I insist, my voice trembling. “Because it looks like you’re hurt. If you’re hurt, Asher, you have to let me help you.”

Asher snaps.
