His palm finally came to rest on my thigh, warm and steady. I turned my head to look at him.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been silent since we left the parish,” he said softly, eyes filled with quiet concern. Somehow, that tenderness made everything click into place.
The words of Sister Rosey had settled deep in my heart, and I knew better than to dismiss the insight of holy people as mere imagination. Whatever she had seen, it was truth.
“Cupid?” I called gently. We were cruising down the highway, heading home. “Cupid… do you remember performing the necessary rituals before your first transformation?”
He frowned slightly, clearly confused by the question, then glanced at me briefly before nodding slowly.
“I had my first shift when I was four, that’s what my mom told me. We were poor. We couldn’t afford all the proper rituals. They cost a fortune.”
I frowned at that.
“Seeking the Moon Goddess’s blessing is supposed to be free.”
“Not when you’re a rogue,” he replied, voice flat. “We were the abandoned, nameless, filthy. Downside rogue town didn’t even have a shrine. We had to travel to the nearest pack for any ceremony. They charged fees just to let us step inside. Said we’d dirty the floor they’d have to wash afterward.”
I shook my head, appalled at the cruelty.
“So… you never completed the necessary rituals?”
“I did once I became a Godlike,” he said, offering a faint smile as he glanced at me again. “Every single one. What’s wrong? Why the questions?”
I shook my head, anxiety still gnawing at me. I studied him for a long moment, wondering if he was the type to believe in prophecy or sacred warnings.
“Cupid… this morning, you didn’t wake up normally. I shook you, but you were so deeply asleep.” I hesitated. “Has that happened before?”
He nodded, shrugging as if it were ordinary.

“When I’m high on coke or fine dust.” He frowned. “It’s normal. What’s wrong?”
“Only to you?”

“Plenty of people are high daily, Snow. What’s bothering you?” His voice softened with worry. “You’re making me anxious.”
“Cupid, you weren’t high last night… and you still didn’t wake. The same thing happened that time at your club.”
“That was different. It happens monthly, wears off when…‘
“It happens only to Alphas,” I cut in gently.
He went completely silent.
“I’ve seen it in my biological father get trapped in the sacred night slumber few times. That moment when the human and werewolf sides colliding. He’d fall into that deep sleep anywhere. Once, during a meeting, he just rested his head on the table and passed out. It’s an Alpha trait… but it happens to you, Cupid.”
I felt the car slow. He pulled over onto the shoulder, tires crunching on gravel, then turned to face me fully.
“I am no Alpha, Snow,” he said with absolute certainty. “What happens to me is ordinary. It can happen to any werewolf. I’m a rogue, born in the filthiest corner of werewolf territory. I hate the Moon Goddess more than you can imagine, and I want nothing of her so–called blessings as an Alpha. I’m not one. Understood?”
I swallowed hard, chilled by the cold anger threading his steady voice. Yes. I saw it in his eyes. He loathed the Goddess who had created him. But why?
I lowered my gaze, blinking back rising emotion, searching for the gentlest way to phrase it.
“Cupid… on our way out of the parish,” I began, holding his gaze, “Sister Rosey said something. She told me you should seek the Moon Goddess for…”
I was still speaking when he released me entirely, turning away. A clear, wordless signal he wanted none of it. My heart clenched.
“Cupid…”
“No,” he murmured, voice low with warning. “No.”
He was firm, unwavering. But I was worried for him.

“Why do you hate the Moon Goddess?” I asked quietly.
He turned back slowly, eyes shadowed.
“She is unfair,” he said, the words heavy. A sad smile touched his lips, breaking my heart. “She doesn’t help when you call on her. She won’t fight your battles. She doesn’t have your back. Her divinity means nothing.”
“Cupid, you know that’s not true,” I opposed softly.
He scoffed, almost bitterly.
“You of all people should know it is,” he said. I went still. He hesitated, then continued gently. “That night in the alley, when you were assaulted… you probably called on the Moon Goddess for help. Did she appear?”
I went cold, tears brimming as memories flooded back.
“When you were mocked, called barren, did she stand beside you?” I couldn’t speak. “My mother… Marlik’s mother… you have no idea how faithfully they worshipped the moon goddess. Day and night, prayers without end. My mother begged for her husband to love her. Marlik’s mother prayed only for peace. In the end? My mother was raped to death. Marlik’s mother never found peace, not even now. She was still on edge the last time I saw her. There are good, pure people who deserve the Goddess’s blessing… but she gave them nothing. So don’t tell me to fall on my knees and seek her guidance. Whatever I want, I take. I don’t need her help.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat, barely breathing under the weight of his words which, devastatingly, made sense.
Without thinking, I leaned into his arms. He held me tenderly, as always.
I rested my head against him, drawing strength from his presence, when a sudden memory struck. I pulled back slowly, eyes widening.
“Wait Cupid? About Marlik… he’s going to be charged in a drug case. It’s coming from the Moon Tower.”
