Cupid’s phone call ended with a quiet “Okay sir. Yes,” and he disconnected, his frown deepening as he stared at the screen for a long second.
The shift in his expression was subtle but unmistakable, something between concern and calculation.
Desmond looked up from his own phone.
“Uncle?”
“Yes.” Cupid exhaled slowly. “He wants us to go get Almira. Says he’s worried about where she is.”
Desmond swallowed, nodding once.
“What should we do?”
“We will go get her this evening.”
Desmond nodded again and stepped away.
Cupid paused, brows knit, gaze distant when the soft sound of footsteps drew every eye in the room upward.
Yasmin appeared at the top of the stairs.
Everything simply… paused.
She wore a simple white cotton gown that fell just past her knees, hair loose and flowing around her shoulders in dark waves.
No trace of yesterday’s fragility. Her eyes were bright, alive in a way that felt almost startling after the hollow version of her we’d seen only hours ago.
She looked younger, stronger, like the girl she might have been if the world hadn’t tried to break her.
Marlik sat up instantly.
Yasmin walked straight to him slow, deliberate then sank to her knees in front of the couch so they were eye–level.
“Marlik…” Her voice was soft, trembling just slightly. “I’m sorry I made you worry.”
He didn’t scold her. Didn’t say a word of reprimand.
Instead, he reached out and pulled her gently onto the couch beside him, taking both her hands in his. His eyes searched hers full of love, relief, and something deeper that looked like gratitude.
“How do you feel?” he asked quietly.
“Very fine today.” She smiled, small, real. “I don’t know why I feel so… strong. Perhaps it’s because of what I overheard last night. That… that…” Her gaze flicked to me.
I stopped breathing,

“That she will report Feroz to the authorities,” she finished. “And help us take justice.”
The room went still.
Even Desmond who had been busy with his cellphone slowed, phone lowering slightly as he looked over.
Yasmin’s eyes stayed on me bright, determined.

“And I want to help in any way I can too. As a witness, as an informant. Anything. I’ve been to Feroz’s den. I’ve been in his bedroom. I know a few of his friends. I know what he truly is.”
“No.”
Mother’s voice came from the balcony above. Firm, almost panicked. She hurried down the stairs, shaking her head, fear and anxiety etched deep in every line of her face.
“No, Jahan. You promised me. You said you would only report to the authorities.”
Cupid turned to her voice quiet, steady.
“Snow is one of the authorities. She’s a profiler from H.O.W.L.”
Mother stiffened.
Her gaze swung to me.
I held my breath, waiting for rejection, for the door to be shown, for the warmth of yesterday to vanish.
But what came instead was horror.
‘You’re telling me…” Her voice cracked. “You’re allowing your lover to go after a madman?”
The question landed like a slap.
My heart stuttered.
never expected her to care. Not for me.
Cupid stepped forward, gentle but unyielding, taking her hand.
“Snow is a Frost,” he said softly. “And the Frosts are the law. She’s safe. Truly. I will keep her safe.” He glanced at Yasmin. “As for you, no. You don’t need to be a witness. Stay away from it.”
“But I want to help.” Yasmin looked up at him, really looked and I saw it. The first time in eighteen years she’d met his eyes without flinching. “I remember the places. I can draw them out. Perhaps you’ll love my drawing this time… and not toss it aside like you did when we were younger.”
Heavy emotion descended.
Cupid’s face flickered, just for a second, something raw and unguarded flashing across it before he schooled it back into steadiness.
Quietly, he crossed to her.

Without a word, he pulled her into his arms.
He held her fiercely, protectively, like he could shield her from every memory that still haunted her.
When he finally pulled back, he cupped her cheek, thumb brushing away the tears that had started to fall.
“I love you,” he said, simple, unshakable.

“I love you too, Jahan.” Yasmin’s voice broke on a quiet sob. “And I’m sorry… for not recognizing you right away. You’re so big now. So handsome.”
“What are you saying?” He managed a small, crooked smile. “I was handsome back then too.”
Marlik scoffed from the couch. “Keep dreaming.”
I watched them laugh through the tears, watched Mother’s face soften with joy and stood there, rooted, witnessing something strange and healing at the same time.
Cupid wasn’t their blood.
But the bond they shared was deeper than blood, forged in survival, loyalty, and quiet, unwavering love.
And suddenly I understood something new. Perhaps my own case would be the same.
Blood didn’t determine love.
Perhaps it would be my non–blooded brothers, Kashi, Eshan, Roc and even Father who stood with me tonight.
Perhaps family wasn’t about who shared your DNA. Perhaps it was about who refused to let you fall.
