Snowflakes

“When will you come back to visit?” Mother asked, her voice barely above a whisper, eyes searching mine with a desperation she couldn’t quite hide.
My heart nearly burst at the question. Raw, vulnerable, the kind of love that didn’t need words to prove itself.
Today had been one of the most beautiful mornings of my life. Standing in the kitchen at dawn, making breakfast alongside her and Yasmin, laughing over slightly burnt toast, Yasmin teasing Mother about her “secret” pancake recipe, me flipping them like I’d done it a thousand times.
The staff moved like gentle ghosts. Silent, respectful, appearing only when spoken to and vanishing just as quickly. They didn’t intrude. They simply made the house feel safe, lived–in, loved.
I smiled at Mother now, soft, reassuring and nodded.
“Soon,” I promised. “I’ll come visit again. And… I’m sorry I didn’t bring any gift. Trust me, I didn’t mean…”
“Nonsense,” she interrupted gently, waving a hand. “What greater gift is there than you?” Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “Just come back, alright? And… don’t get hurt. The world outside is frightening.”
I smiled again, smaller, warmer and nodded.
“Okay, Mother.”
She pulled me into a hug, warm, fierce, smelling faintly of vanilla and home and held me a second longer than necessary. When she finally released me, she caressed my hand like she was afraid to let go completely.
Dove bowed politely. Mother reached out and caressed her arm with the same loving tenderness.
“Be safe too, dear.”
After the quiet exchange of goodbyes, we stepped outside into the crisp night air. The waiting car idled in the driveway, headlights cutting soft beams through the falling snow. My usual chauffeur stood by the open rear door.
I paused.
My gaze drifted back to the house, to Marlik.
He had followed us out, lingering near the fountain, pretending to watch the water ripple under the moonlight. But I knew better. His eyes weren’t on the fountain.
They were on Dove.
All morning I’d noticed the shift in him, subtle glances when he thought no one was looking, the way he’d quietly added more food to her plate at breakfast while pretending it was nothing, the tension in his shoulders every time she laughed or spoke. He was trying so hard to act like he didn’t care.
“You should be careful,” he said quietly, finally meeting my eyes. “And don’t bother coming if it’s unsafe for you. Mom will understand.”

I nodded grateful, touched.

He hesitated, searching my face for a long moment then stepped forward and kissed my cheek. Only Marlik had the audacity to do that in front of Cupid without flinching.
Then his gaze slid to Dove.
She stood a few feet away, eyes deliberately averted, arms wrapped around herself against the cold. Marlik stared at her long, unblinking, before turning and walking back inside without another word.
My heart sank.
I looked at Dove. She was trying so hard to look normal, unbothered, like she didn’t care either. But the tightness around her mouth betrayed her.
She climbed into the car quickly.
I sighed and turned fully to Cupid.
“She’ll be fine, right?” he asked softly.
“Yeah,” I said, though I wasn’t entirely sure. “I think so.”
“You too?”
I nodded.
Then I rose on tiptoe and kissed him, slow, lingering, pouring everything I couldn’t say into it.
When I pulled back, he extended a small black recorder toward me.
My heart leapt into my throat.
“Try not to listen to it alone,” he said quietly. “Just… let your family hear it. Let them know you’re telling the truth.”
Goosebumps raced across my skin.
I nodded, unable to speak and started toward the car.
Cupid’s fingers wrapped around my wrist gentle but firm and pulled me back.
One more kiss. Soft, fierce, full of promise.
“No matter what anyone says,” he whispered against my lips, “no matter what happens tonight, Snow… have it in mind that I will stand by you.”
That assurance again. Deep, unshakable, sent fresh goosebumps racing over me.
Before I could answer, he reached into his pocket and placed a sleek house key in my open palm.
“It’s yours,” he said simply. “Two blocks away from H.O.W.L. Safe. There’s a garage for your car. Anything you need to feel comfortable, it’s already there. If you need anything else… don’t you dare hesitate to ask. Anything. Alright?”
What more could I possibly want?

I bit my lower lip, hard, to keep it from trembling.
Then I kissed him again light, grateful and pulled back.

I looked at the house one last time, memorizing the warm lights, the fountain, the people inside who had become more family to me in one day than most had in years.
Then I walked to the car.
The chauffeur opened the door.
I slid in beside Dove.
The car eased out slowly.
I watched Cupid through the rear window, standing motionless in the driveway, hands in his pockets, snow collecting on his shoulders until we disappeared around the bend.
The ride was quiet.
Dove sat low in her seat, arms crossed, staring out at nothing.
*Should the car drop you home?” I asked softly.
She looked at me absent, far away.
‘I was supposed to follow you home but… I might not survive the sadness tonight, Snowflakes.”
Her honesty hit me like a cold wind.
nodded.
‘Then stay off it. I’ll keep in touch. The car will take you home. I’ll stop at the corner and walk the rest. I need a moment for myself 100.”
She searched my face, long, searching then nodded.
t didn’t take long before we reached my drop–off point. The chauffeur stopped.
I turned to Dove.
She reached for me and hugged me tightly, desperately, like she was afraid to let go.
“I love you with all my heart, Snow.”
“Me too.”
I pulled back just enough to see her eyes shining, determined.
“Be strong,” she whispered.
I smiled soft, small and slipped out.
The door closed behind me.

Snow fell thick and silent around me, catching in my lashes, melting against my skin. Holiday jingles drifted faintly from somewhere far off, distant, almost mocking.
I walked.
Careful steps. Footprints trailing behind me in the fresh powder.
My heart grew heavier with every block, thudding louder, faster as the Frost home loomed ahead.
