I pulled away from the steering wheel and slumped back in the seat. For a long time, I didn’t move. Through the rearview mirror, I could see the police cruiser parked a discreet distance away. I nearly rolled my eyes.
This was my cross now. Just days before I appeared in court, and the cops wouldn’t grant me even the illusion of privacy.
At first, I’d convinced myself they hadn’t hauled me into H.O.W.L. and detained me like they did Feroz because I’d cooperated fully. I
was wrong.
Eshan Frost was a bastard through and through. He was dangling the drunk, hazy thought of freedom in front of me like bait. Any second now, they could grab me, cuff me, drag me away. I hadn’t known a single moment of real peace since it all began.
As much as Neils had warned me to stay still and let him work his legal magic, I couldn’t. I couldn’t sit idle.
The giant billboard belonging to the Godlike Legal Empire had just dropped a new teaser. A skin system, Aura X.
Cupid Godlike’s image dominated the frame, magnified and flawless as the face of the men’s line. That man was becoming more attractive, more overwhelming with every passing day. I couldn’t stand it.
Neils’s one piece of advice had lodged in my brain like a splinter and that is if I could get Valencia to testify that she tricked me into signing the divorce papers, I could prove in court that Snowflakes Frost was still my wife.
Valencia was my only real chance.
That was why I’d come here this evening to talk to her. I took a deep breath, stepped out of the car, adjusted the cap pulled low to conceal my face, and headed into the building.
I appeared at her apartment door and stared at it for a long moment. I reached for the keypad, input the old unlock code but red light. Beep. Rejected. She’d changed it.
No choice left. I rang the bell.
After a few seconds, footsteps approached then stopped abruptly. She must have seen me through the camera.
“Valencia?” I called. “Open up. Let’s talk.”
“Fuck you. I have nothing to say to you.”
I swallowed hard. Fair enough. She had every right. I was the one who’d stooped low enough to tangle with her in the first place.
“Just a few minutes. I beg you. I’ll be gone before you know it.”
Time stretched. I braced for her to ignore me completely.
Then the lock clicked.
The door cracked open just enough for her to glare out at me coldly, unforgiving.
It had been weeks since I’d last seen her. Staring at her now, I barely recognized the woman in front of me. The Valencia ! remembered had been all sly smiles and easy seduction. This one looked at me like I was her worst enemy.

“Hi,” I murmured.
She didn’t want pleasantries.
“What do you want before I slam this door in your face?”
Her voice carried too much venom. I swallowed again, wondering what the hell had happened to her.
“I’m the one who should be mad here, Lencia. You know what you cost me, don’t you? Anyway, I’m here to ask for a favor. I need you to come to court and tell the judge you tricked me into signing those divorce and…”
papers
“You should be the one who’s mad? You?!” she snapped suddenly. Movement stirred in neighboring apartments, people listening. “You sent assassins to kill me, and you dare ask me for a favor?”
I went completely still.
Assassins? What the hell was she talking about?
“The next time you show up on my doorstep, I’ll call the cops on you. Thank goodness they already have eyes on you.”
She moved to slam the door. I jammed my foot in the gap and pushed inside before it could close.
The door snapped shut behind me.
I froze in the middle of her apartment, cold all over. Slowly, I turned to face her.
