Charlotte tilted her head and narrowed her eyes. “You’re that certain?”
Evander stopped and turned to face her. “I practically watched her grow up, so of course I know her personality. The only real hardship she’s ever faced is getting scammed out of money because she’s too naive. Since she’s made up her mind to earn her own money, I’m giving her the chance. After all, she’s the only heir to the Sutherland family. I’d be thrilled if she could actually support herself. I’m just afraid she’ll suffer for a few days and come running back to me.”
She raised an eyebrow. “I hear the Sutherlands are famous for doting on their daughters. You let your only niece run around like this? Aren’t you worried?”
“When a fledgling is grown, it has to leave the nest and see the world. No matter how much you want to protect them, they need to be tested.”
…
Natalie handed the signed agreement to Rosemary. The matriarch put on her glasses and read through the document, remarking, “Evander really put a lot of thought into this.”
“Mr. Howard knew Mrs. Howard would try to back out, so he had a contingency plan.”
Ilse probably never dreamed that from the moment she agreed to the condition, she had walked right into a trap.
She had assumed her verbal promise was just talk and that she could easily find an excuse to refuse later. The recording was merely a bluff to corner Jensen. Even the agreement Ilse had supposedly signed was a fake; only the one Jensen signed was real.
And since Jensen had read the contents before signing, he would have no evidence of coercion if he tried to contest it later.
Rosemary placed the agreement back in the folder. “Splitting the family is the best solution.”
Her heart still ached when she thought of her son’s deliberate attempt on her life, but he was still her own flesh and blood.
If she had failed to raise him well, she bore some of the blame.
She didn’t want their relationship to devolve into bitter hatred, so this settlement was the last shred of dignity she could offer Jensen and his family.
“You’ve worked hard these past few days. Now I need to rest up and save my energy for when Evander brings Lottie back to visit.”
“Of course.” After helping the matriarch lie down, Natalie left the hospital room with the documents.
