Ilse’s smile froze for an instant. She averted her gaze and said with a gentle laugh, “What’s Eldermere City? I was on a business trip in Riverspire City, of course.”
“How dare you lie to me!” Jensen suddenly swept the cup off the table, shot to his feet, and pointed a finger at her, roaring, “You went to Eldermere City to see Evander, don’t think I don’t know!”
Ilse was completely stunned. There was no point in guessing how he found out; she had been exposed. She had no choice but to confess. “Yes! I went to Eldermere City to see Evander, but it was to stop him from returning to The Capital!”
“Was it to stop him?” Jensen jabbed his finger at her nose. “Or was it to agree to Evander’s plan to split the family?!”
“What split? I was just humoring Evander! How could I possibly agree to that—”
Before she could finish, Jensen played the recording.
Ilse froze, a memory seeming to surface, and her face went deathly pale.
She couldn’t believe it. Evander had recorded her!
“This… did Evander give this to you?” Ilse, finally realizing the gravity of the situation, tried to explain. “It’s not like that, darling, let me explain—”
Before her hand could touch Jensen, he shoved her, sending her sprawling to the floor.
Just then, Genevieve Howard, who had heard the commotion from upstairs, witnessed the scene as she came down.
She rushed down the stairs. “Dad, what are you doing?!”
Genevieve ran to Ilse’s side and helped her up. Ilse stared blankly at Jensen. It was the first time he had ever laid a hand on her. “You don’t believe me?”
“Believe what? That you betrayed me, capitulated to Evander, and signed that damn settlement agreement?”
Settlement agreement?
Genevieve froze and looked at her father. “What settlement agreement?”
“Ask your mother!”
Ilse was equally dumbfounded. “No… what settlement agreement? I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“Still trying to deny it?” Jensen, convinced Ilse was acting, was red-faced with anger. “Natalie brought two agreements to me. One of them had your signature on it. I know your handwriting! How dare you say you didn’t betray me?”
