Half a month later, on what was supposed to be the day of the Rayburn family's engagement party, Mr. Rayburn's trial was held. Caleb Rayburn’s legal team had done everything they could in the appeal, presenting evidence that Shane Rayburn had been involved in a murder prior to her death. This reduced the original six-year prison sentence to three.
However, due to Mr. Rayburn's advanced age and his full cooperation with the investigation, the final verdict was a one-year suspended sentence.
The area outside the courthouse was deserted. The Rayburn family had clearly managed to keep the trial under wraps, avoiding the attention of society reporters.
Accompanied by his entourage, Mr. Rayburn got into a car and left the premises.
Inside the car, Mr. Rayburn coughed a few times. Caleb handed him a bottle of water and said calmly, “Dad, you were too reckless about what happened with Shane.”
Mr. Rayburn twisted the cap off, took a sip, and said, “If she hadn’t died, she would have destroyed the Rayburn family sooner or later. But let’s keep Susy and Sean from knowing too much about this.”
Caleb remained silent.
“Is everything all right at home?”
“Yes, everything’s fine. We managed to control the news, but a few whispers still got out.” Caleb’s tone was steady as ever.
Mr. Rayburn smiled faintly. “It doesn’t matter. Those rumors will eventually be drowned out by other scandals. As long as the Rayburn family’s foundations are intact, we’ll be fine.” He placed the water bottle in the armrest holder. “As for family matters, make sure you stay close with Susy’s husband’s family. We owe them a great deal for their help this time.”
Caleb nodded, his gaze shifting to the window. His reflection stared back, his expression complex and unreadable.
…
Charlotte spent the entire morning engrossed in the lab. She had wanted to attend Mr. Rayburn’s trial, but her father had forbidden her from going, and he hadn’t let her brother go either.
Snapping out of her thoughts, she looked up and saw Lilith standing outside the glass partition, waving at her.
A short while later, Charlotte stepped out of the lab and removed her mask. “I hear you’ve been working part-time lately. It’s rare to see you around here.”
