Chapter 41

Chapter 41

“mmmhm” I moaned as the bright light penetrated my eyelids. I stretched dramatically then winced as my head pounded badly.

“Fuck” I cursed out loud. My head was killing me. I turned to see a card of Advil and a bottle of water on the bed side table.

Wait!!

Where the fuck am I?

It took me a minute to adjust to my surroundings. I was in a kingside bed covered in burgundy satin sheets and it smelt like whiskey and oud; delicious and very masculine.

I covered my mouth with my palm. I can’t believe I fucked a stranger and didn’t remember. I took the duvet off my body and got off the bed. I caught my reflection. My hair was in a loose bun at the top of my head and my face was wiped cleam of all traces of make-up.

That’s quite strange?

I looked down at myself and discovered I was in a man’s t-shirt.

“Oh my goodness! What have I done?” I said out loud.

I froze.

Okay. Think. Last night… tequila.Dancing. Someone shouting. Maddox-Oh God.

I squeezed my eyes shut. “No, no, no… please don’t let me be that girl.”

The kind that blacks out and wakes up in a stranger’s bed with zero memory and a lifetime of regret.

“I don’t even do this,” I whispered to myself.

Then paused. “Oh my God… did I at least look hot doing it?”

“That isn’t the first thing most women say when they wake up in my bed.” I turned to see a shirtless Maddox; clad only in grey sweat pants leaning on the wall and watching me with a smirk.

I dropped to my knees immediately. What have I done? I can’t believe I did this again, giving myself cheaply to him when he doesn’t give a damn about me.

The sound of Maddox laughing caught my attention, “Relax,” he said, clearly entertained. “Nothing happened.”

I blinked at him.

“Nothing… happened?” I repeated slowly.

“You passed out halfway through yelling at me about capitalism and male ego.”

“…I did not.”

“You absolutely did. You also tried to fight a coat rack.”

I stared at him.

“It looked aggressive,” I muttered.

I felt relief flood my senses immediately. Colour rose to my cheeks as I realized he saw me nude. I paused then realized I was still in my panties: Thank God.

I felt his intense gaze on me and then looked down to see my nipples poking through his shirt. Shit, I didn’t wear a bra yesterday because the romper was backless and I didn’t put on nipple covers. He definitely saw my boobs.

I crossed my hands on my chest immediately,

He cleared his throat awkwardly “Your stuff is on the dresser alongside a change of clothes, fresh towel, toothbrush, ha brush and your skincare.”

His gaze dropped again before he caught himself and looked away.

Too late. I saw it. The flicker and the awareness.

Heat crawled up my neck. “You could’ve… I don’t know… given me a bra?” I muttered.

“You were unconscious, Nia. I wasn’t about to go lingerie shopping at 2 a.m.”

“You bought everything else!”

“…fair point.”

He shut the door before I could say a word. I walked to the dresser in shock to see a new batch of skincare products. How did he know what skincare I used?

I came out of the shower and got dressed. Maddox really outdid himself with the clothes. He got me blue baggy Levi’s, white tank top and Hermes slides. He also has really expensive taste in underwear; he got me a Victoria’s secret matching bra and panties set.

I arranged the skincare products and my stuff from last night into one of the shopping bags, but my phone was nowhere to be found. I grabbed my purse and the shopping bag and headed towards the door.

I paused a bit to appraise the room; the overall scheme was very dark. Just like his soul. I shut the door behind me and took the staircase down. I walked until I got to the open plan kitchen.

“Where are we?” I asked as soon as I got down,

“My penthouse” he replied, not bothering to turn around.

“It’s really beautiful” I said, taking the scene in. The interior designer really captured Maddox’s aesthetic with the dark theme and floor to ceiling windows

“Hungry?” He asked, flipping pancakes skilfully.

I stood awkwardly behind him tracing the tattoos on his well defined back with my eyes. Damn. I can never get used to seeing him shirtless, “Is it poisoned?”

“If I wanted to kill you Nia, I would have done it when you were out getting shitfaced last night” he said turning to me, “What the hell were you even thinking?”

“I’m not obligated to answer you Maddox” I said, taking a seat at the diner, “Where’s my phone?”

“It’s right here, it was beeping crazily so I had to keep it here, so it won’t wake you up.” He placed my phone, the plated stack of pancakes in front of me; drizzled with maple syrup and a matcha latte.

I poked at my pancakes, suddenly not as hungry anymore.

Victor Kane’s voice echoed in my head.

Chapter 41

He disappeared upstairs and came back a minute later with the pills and a glass of water, setting them down in front of me

I made a face, staring at them like they personally offended me.

“Nia,” he said, quieter this time, but firmer. “Take it.”

“I hate pills,” I mumbled.

“I don’t care. You’re taking it. You’re a Doctor for chrissake!”

I sighed, then snatched them from his hand and swallowed quickly, chasing it with water like it was a punishment.

“Good,” he said, watching me for a second before sitting back down.

I pushed my plate slightly away, my appetite gone.

“What are we going to do about the photo?” I asked, my voice lower now. “Mr. Hale said no scandals.”

Maddox barely looked bothered. “It’s not a scandal.”

I frowned. “How is that not a scandal?”

“He wanted something real, didn’t he?” he shrugged lightly. “That’s real.”

I stared at him for a second, trying to read his expression, but he gave me nothing.

“I should go.” I said after a moment, more quietly this time. “I don’t… I don’t really want to stay.”

I stood again, slower this time, waiting for the dizziness to pass.
