Chapter 42

“Thank you,” I said as I stepped out of the car in front of the house.

“You’re welcome, Dr. Page,” the driver replied with a polite nod before driving off into the quiet evening.

“Mama!”

Zara came running the second I stepped through the door, her tiny socks sliding against the wooden floor.

A tired smile spread across my face instantly.

“Hi Zar Bear.” I picked her up and gave her a peck on each cheek, “I missed you, where’s Gigi?”

“She’s doing laundry” she replied as I put her down,

“Mom, Good evening” I greeted while taking a seat,

“Are you okay?” Mom asked immediately.

She crossed the room before I could answer and pressed the back of her hand against my forehead.

Her frown deepened.

“You’re warm. And you look exhausted.”

“I’m fine, Mom,” I muttered, trying to stand.

“No, you are not.” Her voice turned firm instantly. “Sit down.”

Zara gasped dramatically beside me.

“Gigi is going to give you a shot,” she whispered like it was the worst tragedy imaginable.

I groaned inwardly.

“Your temperature is a bit high and you’re very pale”

“I’m fine mom” I replied trying to get up,

“No you’re not” her voice, very stern, “Sit right here! I’m coming”

She abandoned the laundry and walked briskly up the stairs.

Zara walked up to me and tried checking my temperature, like mom did “You’re not feeling well Mama?”

“I’m okay Baby” I replied chucking,

“Gigi is going to give you a shot” She gestured her little arm at my mom coming down with a first aid box.

I groaned inwardly, “Mom please, I’ve taken some Advil already

“Are you sure about that?” She asked, not even bothering to mask her disbelief,

“I’m very sure Mom.” I said rising to my feet and grabbing my bags,

“Go take a nap then, I’ll come check on you later,” she replied,

Chapter 42

“Okay mom, Thank You” I said turning to leave,

I headed straight to my room, changed into my comfiest pajamas and got into bed.

I hated alcohol.

My head still felt heavy and my stomach turned every time I remembered the tequila from Friday night.

I just prayed I would not wake up throwing up again.

It was dusk already when I opened my eyes. I felt something cool on my forehead. I checked to see that someone had plaged a cool towel on my forehead.

Classic mom, she worries way too much. I stretched then got out of bed. I turned to see the tulips I placed in the vase Maddox gave me. They were doing really great.

“How are you feeling now?” Mom asked, as I headed downstairs and took the seat next to her,

“I’m feeling a lot better now,” I replied as I snuggled with Zara,

“You slept long Mama,” Zara said yawning,

“Yeah I did love, I’m really tired,” I got up and walked to the refrigerator to grab a bottle of water,

“There’s pasta in the fridge” Mom said getting up, “I’m heading to bed now, come Zar Bear it’s bed time”

I bid them both good night and microwaved my food. I took a seat on the couch and decided to binge watch the big bang theory.

The weekend went by quickly before I could realise. I sat at my desk going about my daily activities. I was feeling significantly better compared to Saturday. I was worried I got alcohol poisoning at one point as I didn’t really drink often.

I rested my head on my palm as I tried to recount the memories of that night, but to no avail.

A knock on my door distracted me from my thoughts,

“Come in”

“Am I having deja vu or something?” I asked chuckling as Vera and Edna came in and took a seat,

“No you’re not” they laughed as they took a seat,

“Sorry about Friday” I said,

“It’s alright, there’s no need to apologise” Vera replied, “We’re the ones supposed to be apologising”

“What do you mean?” I asked confused, “I came on my own volition”

“I know but Maddox was really pissed,” Edna said, “So we were worried he took it out on you,”

“He has quite a terrible temper,” Vera nodded in agreement,

“I’m fine,” I said trying to reassure them, “He was truly pissed but he didn’t take it out on me, he never does”.

I swallowed the lump in my throat, trying to dispel the memories of my high school days.

“Okay” Vera said smiling, “That night was fine though,”

“Yes it was, we’re definitely having a recap,” Edna butted in,

“Honestly..” their heads snapped to me,

“You didn’t enjoy it?” Vera pouted,

“I did, up to the point I remembered” I replied,

“What do you mean by, up to the point you remembered?” Edna asked confused,

“Girl, my memory is foggy as hell,” I said heat rising to my cheeks,
