Chapter 46
Chapter 46
I woke up the next morning and started preparing for work as usual. I was already dreading the day ahead. If I had my way I would have called in sick but I can’t. I don’t want my friends at the office getting worried about me.
Friends? I’m glad I have more people who care about me genuinely, even when I’m being a fraud basically. Up until now it’s just been Natalie and of course Beck.
It was a Monday morning so I decided to dress the part at least. I put on black slacks, a white button up shirt which I tucked in and a sleeveless knit vest. I opted for black slingbacks with a kitten heel and my trusty leather tote bag. I decided to do a little updo today using a claw clip and it really turned out cute.
Yes, I’m all set for the day ahead. Even though I’m not mentally prepared for it, I squared my shoulders and headed out of my apartment. It’s going to be a good day.
Or not…
My engine whistled in pain as I tried to start it. What the hell is going on? I drove her yesterday and she was just fine.
“Not today Satan.” I groaned as I rested my head on the steering wheel, banging my fists against the dashboard. I’ll have to take an uber then I don’t have a choice. I’ll also need to call my mechanic to have my car towed. I just hope it’s nothing too
crazy.
“Need help?” A very familiar baritone voice called from above me.
“Yes I do,” I replied as I got out of my car to face Liam. He looked deliciously good, wearing a brown crew neck sweater which framed his bulging muscles and black jeans.
“Pop open your hood for me please?” He examined around a little and then frowned a bit. “You need to get it checked out. I’ll call the team’s mechanic to come check it out.”
I watched as he placed a call across immediately.
“They’re on their way. In the meantime let’s head to work. I’ll drop you off. Keys please.”
My fingers grazed his palm slightly as I dropped the keys in his hand.
“You should remove your personal belongings from the car.”
I grabbed my stuff from the car and headed to the elevator. Liam handed the keys to his security and instructed them to hand it over once the team mechanics came with the towing van.
“Ready Nia?” He asked as I came back.
“Yeah” I replied, as he opened the door of his Dodge Challenger.
Liam’s car smelt like cinnamon. His expensive oud perfume invaded my nostrils as he took the driver’s seat.
“Seat belt please.”
I obeyed calmly. There’s something about this man. He has a very majestic aura around him. It’s just so inviting. I blushed profusely as he caught me staring.
“Don’t worry your car will be handled in no time” he smiled reassuringly.
“I hope it’s nothing serious,” I said, returning the smile. “She has been making weird noises lately. I’ve been wanting to check it out but I haven’t had the time.”

Chapter 46
“Nia,” Maddox said as I took my seat behind the desk. “I’m really sorry about that day.”
“Okay.”
His brows pulled together. “That’s it?”
I looked up briefly. “Did you want a certificate?”
“Nia.”
“I heard you the first time.”
He exhaled heavily. “I was an asshole.”
“Yes, everyone knows that.”
“I shouldn’t have said what I said.”
“No, you shouldn’t have.”
A muscle ticked in his jaw. “Have you forgiven me?”
I finally looked up from my laptop. “Yes.”
Relief flashed across his face.
Then I smiled sweetly.
“Unfortunately for you, forgiveness and access are two completely different things.””
His smile disappeared. “What?”
“I forgave you,” I repeated. “That doesn’t mean I want to talk to you. It doesn’t mean I want you in my office. It doesn’t mean we’re friends.”
“Nia-”
“Get out.”
His jaw dropped.
I pointed at the door. “Out.”
“Wait! What?” he asked, confused. “You can’t be serious” his shock was evident on his face.
“Oh! But I am serious Maddox,” I said, rising to my feet. “As serious as a heart attack.”
“You slapped me. I came here to apologise and you’re still throwing me out?”
“The slap was well deserved by the way and I forgave you didn’t I?” I said.
“If you did, why are you chasing me out?” He asked.
“Because I don’t want to talk to you right now, Maddox.” I pinched the bridge of my nose and let out a frustrated breath. “Why is that so hard for you to understand?”
He opened his mouth, probably ready to argue again, but a knock sounded on the door.
We both turned toward it.
