Chapter 48
Chapter 48
My new car?
“Mr. Kane instructed us to hand it to you.” The words didn’t register at first.
I just stood there, staring at the car like it might disappear if I blinked.
It didn’t.
The paint caught the morning light-sleek, black, flawless. Untouched. Expensive in a way that made my chest feel tight.
“No,” I said under my breath, already shaking my head.
I stepped back.
“Dr. Page-” the guard called after me.
I didn’t stop.
“Dr. Page!”
I slid into the Uber and pulled the door shut a little too fast.
“Drive, please.”
The car pulled off, and I sank into the seat, pressing my palm against my forehead.
“Shit… Mr. Kane is going to kill me,” the guard muttered somewhere behind us.
I let out a quiet breath.
Guilt flickered… then faded.
I turned to look out the window. The car was still there.
Parked. Waiting. Like it belonged to me. My fingers curled into my lap.
There was no way. That thing cost more than everything I owned combined, And he just… handed it to me. Like it was nothing.
I swallowed hard and looked away.
Poor guy. I felt really sorry for him but there was no way I could accept that car. That was years of my salary combined. I always knew Maddox was stinkingly rich but gifting someone an Audi is another level, the latest one at that.
I don’t even want to know how he knew my dream car. Damn, I do love that car though. I always used to scroll through videos and videos of it. It’s very sexy and that matte black is sensational and all of a sudden it’s mine?
Just like that?
It’s not everyday a person just gets handed their dream car. There’s no way I can handle that. Maddox just took my normal life and flipped it on his head.
I took a deep exhale as the driver pulled over in the driveway of Rogers Arena and alighted. I walked into my office and took a seat. I have a few things to attend to before I go on my trip to Mykonos.
I still can’t believe it. I wonder what mom will say when I let her know that I’m not only going on a trip to Greece, I own an

Audi now. I don’t think I’ll ever be prepared enough for her reaction and there’s no way I can hide it from her. I’ll just not
take the car.
After working undisturbed for a while, I grabbed my phone and texted Natalie,
I stared at the message box for a long moment before typing.
“I’m going to Mykonos with Maddox.”
Three dots appeared instantly.
“And… My car broke down. He bought me a new one.”
The reply came in seconds.
“WHAT???”
Another message.
“Start from the beginning. Slowly.”
I let out a breath through my nose. “It’s an Audi.”
A pause. Then- “Of course it is.”
I almost smiled.
“Are you okay?” she added.
I hesitated. “I don’t know.”
Another pause.
Then, she replied. “Nia… take it.”
I frowned at the screen.
“That doesn’t feel right.”
“It’s not supposed to,” she replied. “That’s the point. You’ve been surviving for so long, anything easy feels suspicious.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“She’s right…” I muttered to myself.
“It’s a contract,” Natalie continued. “Take what comes with it. Enjoy it while it lasts.”
My fingers hovered over the screen.
While it lasts.
I didn’t reply after that.
I should see the car as a ‘push present’ really? I really do not know what to do now.
Would things have turned out differently if I told Maddox about Zara?
I couldn’t help but wonder. He would have taken her from me. He would have, I just know.
Chapter 48
I rose from my desk and gathered my stuff into my bag. I paused and took a look around my office. I worked really hard for this job. Spending sleepless nights in the college library, striving to get good grades so I’ll be able to support mom and my child.
Only to land my dream job and be turned into an actress?
I’m still grateful though, just like Natalie said I have to focus on the positives.
“You’re going on leave?” the nurses asked as soon as I stepped out of my office,
“Yes I am.” I said with a sad smile,
“We’ll miss you very much,” Edna said, “But you deserve it though, you’ve been working non stop since you resumed”
“I’ll miss you all too.” I replied,
“Group hug,” Another nurse said, spreading her arms. I chuckled as we all hugged.
I bid them goodbye as I stepped out of the physio suite, shutting the door behind me and walked into the hallway colliding into a wall?
“Ow,” I winced as a firm hand on my lower back steadied me, a strong masculine scent invading my nostrils as I locked eyes with stormy gray ones,
“Are you alright?” Maddox asked, his voice oddly soft as he towered over me, his hand still firmly clasped on my back.
“Um” I stared at his perfect cupid’s bow, completely at loss for words,
“Nia?” He asked,
I removed my gaze from his lips, “I’m alright. Can you let go of me please?”
“You rejected the car,” He stated as he removed his hand,
“Yeah I did,” I replied, holding his gaze,
“I talked to the mechanic and he said it’s a 70/40 chance the car will work even if the engine is replaced.” he said calmly, which is shocking, “You don’t need to like me, just take the car,”
He dug his hand into his pocket and took out two car keys. I noticed he had the macrame key chain on it.
“All the necessary car papers are in the car,” He said as he placed my new keys in my palm, “I’ll see you later”
I stared in shock as he walked away.
Did I and Maddox just have a civilised conversation? I was expecting us to have a dramatic argument about how his girlfriend can’t be seen driving a Honda.
I wonder what happened to me?
I walked toward the car slowly, like getting too close might make it disappear.
The key felt heavier in my hand than it should. I pressed unlock. A soft click. The lights blinked. It didn’t disappear.
I exhaled quietly and opened the door, sliding into the driver’s seat. The leather was cool and smooth beneath my fingers, the kind you don’t even want to crease.
For a second, I just sat there. Hands on the wheel. Breathing.
