Ì paced around my sitting room, dragging a hand through my hair for what had to be the hundredth time.
I should have been asleep, but instead, I was thinking about Nia.
Again, I dropped onto the couch and leaned my head back. It wasn’t just the memory of her in Mykonos.
It was the little things. The way she’d rolled her eyes whenever I irritated her.
The sarcastic comments muttered under her breath.
The way she’d gone soft around Zara. The sight of her carrying bags full of gifts for everyone except herself.
I scrubbed both hands over my face.
What the hell was happening to me? Then my mind betrayed me.
A quiet gasp. Chocolate hair spread across white sheets. Brown eyes squeezing shut. I cursed under my breath.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. What unsettled me even more was the look on her face afterward.
The panic. The regret. As if she’d forgotten who she was with for a second. And then remembered.
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees.
Had she been thinking about someone else?
Beck?
The thought landed like a punch to the gut.
I frowned.
Why the hell did I care? Nia could date whoever she wanted. Sleep with whoever she wanted. It had nothing to do with me.
So why did the idea of another man touching her make something ugly twist in my chest?
I stood abruptly and began pacing again.
This was ridiculous.
I had known Nia for years.
I had walked away from her once already.
So why did the thought of her walking away from me now feel unbearable?
A lot of things had changed about her. Gone was the girl who used to shrink herself to fit into other people’s expectations. Nia had edges now. She challenged me, and walked away from me. Looked me in the eye when she told me no. It was almost like she had been reborn.
There was another sight I could never forget the look of horror on her face when she orgasmed. She looked mortified. The thrill wore off, leaving her with the bitter realization that she was still with me. I could not help but wonder if she had been picturing another person the whole time.
If she was, who was he?

Chapter 65
Thinking back now, she had never really spoken about any of her exes. I was more curious about who her baby daddy was Were they still in contact?
I knew once I told my PI I would get answers. But I almost did not want to know. Ignorance is bliss, they say.
I would rather be blissfully unaware than find out they were still in contact.
1 had not even realized why I was thinking about all this. Who she decided to be with was none of my business.
Right?
But somehow the thought of her being with someone else made me feel sick to my stomach.
My phone rang. I grabbed it quickly, pausing my thoughts for a while.
“Father,” I said.
“Maddox,” he said coldly.
“I want to see you right now,” he continued. I could hear rustling in the background.
“Where?” I asked.
“LA Kings,” he said and ended the call.
I checked the time. It was a few minutes after 9 p.m.
I dropped my phone on the coffee table and headed upstairs to take a quick shower. I got dressed in a black single-breasted suit with matching dress pants and a silk button-down shirt.
I grabbed the keys to my Chevrolet and headed out. I inserted the keys into the ignition and sped down the highway.
I arrived at LA Kings in no time. I tossed my keys to the valet and walked in, straightening my suit before I stepped inside.
I squinted from the sudden harshness of the neon lights. The smell of alcohol, smoke, and sweat invaded my senses.
I walked through the crowd to one of the private rooms. Father was seated when I stepped in. He held a lit cigar in one hand and a glass of vodka in the other.
A scantily dressed woman twirled around the pole. The light reflected on her leopard-print outfit as she moved gracefully.
“Take a seat, Maddox,” Father said.
“That will be all for now, my sweet. I’ll call you back soon.”
“Okay, Daddy,” she said as she waltzed out of the room.
“You travelled to another country with that doctor girl?” he spat in disgust. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“I didn’t have a choice,” I said, interlocking my fingers.
“Don’t tell me that for goodness sake,” he dropped the glass on the table with a loud thud. “You’re a Kane. You always have a
choice.”
“It’s part of the contract we signed,” I replied, already feeling stressed.
“Then I’ll talk to Hale tomorrow. He can’t be serious. I’ll make sure he does something about it,” he muttered. “What about the engagement to Bella?”

“I’m not marrying Bella.”
Father’s expression hardened.

“That wasn’t a request.” He frowns. “That’s an already concluded discussion,” he added. “You don’t have the right to refuse. It’s all in our best interest.”
I laughed once. Short. Bitter. “Watch me.” I got up immediately. “I’ll be on my way.”
“I want those papers signed by the next time I see you.”
1 walked out on him without waiting to hear his response.
I wasn’t really in the mood to talk about anything with him. He didn’t care about any other person but himself.
I got into my car and drove off. It was a couple of minutes past 11 p.m. I really needed rest.
I took a quick shower and got into bed. I will handle the rest of all this shit tomorrow.
I woke up the next morning, did my regular daily workout, showered, and got ready for the day ahead. I got dressed in black jeans, a white t-shirt, and a brown leather jacket.
I got into my car and drove to the arena. I parked in my designated spot and alighted.
“Good morning, Coach,” I greeted as soon as I stepped into his office. He had called us all for a strategic meeting.
“Nice of you to join us, Mr. Kane,” he said as the rest of the team snickered.
I took a seat quietly as he proceeded with the meeting.
We rounded up in about an hour, and I headed to the locker room to get changed for practice.
“How was Greece?” Liam asked, bumping my shoulder. “You and Dr. Page survive being trapped together?”
“It was great, up until she started avoiding me,” I sighed, shaking my head. “Barely.”
Liam grinned. “So that’s a yes?”
“She hasn’t spoken to me since we got back.”
“What happened?” he asked, worried.
