“You’re not working anymore, Mama?” Zara asked as she munched on her breakfast. Her little legs swung under the table.

I paused and let out a loud laugh. “I’m still working, baby.”

“You didn’t go to work yesterday and you’re still standing in your pajamas,” she pointed out, tilting her head.

“That’s because I’m on leave, baby,” I answered, packing her lunch box. The plastic clicked shut under my fingers.

“You’re leaving?” She turned to me with wide eyes.

“No, baby.” I tried to explain. “Leave is like break time. I get time off from work.”

“Oh!” she exclaimed. “So you’re taking a break from work.”

“That’s right, Zar Bear.” I helped her put on her backpack. “Come on, the bus is here.”

I walked her to the bus and waved until it disappeared down the street. Mom had left very early today. She had something o take care of at the clinic.

I grabbed the vacuum cleaner when the doorbell rang. The person was lucky. I had just been about to grab my headphones. Cleaning always felt better with music on.

“Delivery for Dr. Page,” the delivery man said as I opened the door.

“I’m she.” I replied, holding the door half open.

“Sign here please.” He handed me a huge pink box with a giant bow and a place to sign.

“Thank you,” I said as I shut the door.

“Who can this be from?” I wondered as I placed the box on the counter top.

I untied the bow and opened the box. An invitation written in elegant cursive sat on top.

“Dear Nia, we are honoured to invite you to our pop-up at Meridian Hotel. Come, let’s have brunch together. Signed: Maybelline Beauty and TRESemmé.”

I checked the date. It was today.

I grabbed my phone and dialed Maddox immediately. Screw the fact that I was avoiding him. I needed answers.

“Nia,” he picked up on the first ring.

“I just got a PR package for TRESemmé and Maybelline’s pop-up and the event is today?” I asked, pinching the bridge of my

nose.

“You were supposed to get that yesterday,” he replied.

“That’s still too soon,” I sighed.

“To be fair, they tried countless times to reach you but couldn’t since you deactivated your Instagram,” he stated. “What time is the event?”

“It’s for 12 p.m..” I replied.

“Go to the condo now. I’ll send your glam squad over and also a driver to take you to the event and back,” he said and ended

the call.

It was currently a few minutes past 8. I still had a bit of time. I couldn’t believe brands were now sending me packages. It felt surreal.

I always watched unboxing videos when I still had Instagram. Who would have thought I would be unboxing my own one day?

I removed the invitation from the box.

“Oh my goodness!”

There were tons of makeup products-foundations, concealers, eyeshadow, setting spray, and more. There was also TRESemmé leave-in conditioner and shampoos.

I smiled as I went through the box. I now understood the feeling most influencers got. I arranged everything back into the box neatly and set it aside.

I decided to finish my chores and make lunch before taking a shower. I grabbed my phone and called the babysitter. I needed to make sure everything was in order for Zara before I left.

I showered and got dressed. I wore oversized gray sweatpants, a tank top, slides, and carried my leather tote bag. I picked up the giant PR box and was out the door.

Samantha and Brittany were already at the condo when I arrived.

“Sorry for keeping you guys waiting,” I said.

“It’s alright. We arrived not too long ago ourselves,” Brittany said as I pulled them both into a group hug.

We took the elevator to my apartment. “You’re attending the pop-up, right?”

“Yes, we are. We can head there together. That’s if you don’t mind, of course,” Sam said.

“Of course I don’t,” I smiled. “The event will be a whole lot more enjoyable with you both.”

“Aww, I’m blushing,” Sam giggled.

“You’re so unserious,” Brittany said, laughing. “Your stylist sent an outfit for the event.”

“Oh!” I said excitedly.

I opened the dust bag to reveal a gorgeous strapless sky-blue floral dress. It was short but flowy. There was also a pair of white platform mules and a matching Prada mini bag.

I grabbed my phone and texted the stylist immediately. I thanked him profusely and promised to send him photos. I loved him so much. He was really thoughtful and remarkable at his craft.

I got into the makeup chair Sam had set up. I tried calling her Sammie once, but she didn’t like it because it reminded her of her mom each time she did something wrong.

We settled on a glowy glam with sky-blue graphic winged eyeliner. Brittany pulled my hair into a neat bun and lightly curled my bangs.

“You look really beautiful,” they both cooed as I twirled to show them my final outfit.

“Thank you very much.” I really loved my look. Sam and Brit nailed it as always.

I stood as Sam applied a little more shimmer to my cheekbones and the setting spray I got in the PR.

I took a couple of mirror selfies as they got ready. I was so happy with my look.

I checked my reflection again.

Then once more.

I adjusted the strap of my bag before realizing I’d already done it twice.

“Nia.”

I looked up to find Samantha watching me through the mirror.

“You’ve been fixing that bag for the last five minutes.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied, smoothing invisible wrinkles from my dress.

Brittany snorted. “You look like you’re about to defend your dissertation.”

“I would rather defend my dissertation,” I muttered.

Sam laughed. “It’s just brunch.”

“Brunch with influencers and celebrities,” I corrected.

Brittany walked over and took my hands before I could fuss with my outfit again.
