I paced around the hallway as the medics wheeled Nia off into the ER. My shoes squeaked against the polished floor with every step. How the hell did I let things escalate to this point?
I never should have let her go unattended. This was all my fault. I couldn’t believe I underestimated Bella that much. I always knew she was batshit crazy, but not to this point. Not to the point of pushing Nia into an eight-foot pool.
I ordered my security and PI to look for her. There was no way she would get out of this unscathed. Bella had fled the scene as soon as she pushed Nia into the pool.
But it didn’t matter. A lot of people saw Bella push her in, and there were cameras installed everywhere.
I watched as the hotel security, now changed into dry clothes, walked toward me.
“Thank you very much,” I said, shaking his hand. “If you weren’t there, I don’t even want to think about what would have happened.”
“You’re welcome. I just happened to be close by when the unfortunate situation took place,” he said, shaking his head.
I turned to face Nia’s glam squad. The pink-haired one was bawling her eyes out.
“It’s not your fault,” I said.
“But…” the brunette started.
“There’s nothing you would have done. She’s going to be fine.”
And Nia wasn’t going to be happy if they continued blaming themselves, but I didn’t add that.
“Sir,” the security guy said. I really needed to ask his name. “Something happened before the incident.”
“What?” I asked, very curious.
“Dr. Page was in a pretty heated conversation with a man before Miss Laurent walked toward them,” he said.
“A heated conversation??” I asked again to be sure. Nia wasn’t someone that got agitated easily.
“Yes. She was talking to a man she called Trey,” he explained. “I noticed and asked if he was bothering her. She said yes, so I removed him from the premises.”
“Trey?” That name didn’t sound familiar at all.
“That’s not all,” he continued. “He said, “Thanks, Belle’ to Miss Laurent as I was walking him out.”
I felt my blood run cold immediately. I grabbed my phone and called the PI.
“There’s a man named Trey that Nia had an altercation with before she was pushed into the pool. I believe he is related to this incident. He knows Bella also.”
“Find him,” I said and ended the call.
“What is your name please?” I asked him finally.
“Leo. Leo Winters,” he answered.
“Leo. I’d like to thank you properly for what you did today. My assistant will get your details. I’d also like to discuss a job opportunity with you if you’re interested.”

“I can resign, sir.”
I smiled for the first time today.

“That’s great,” I replied, pointing to my personal assistant. “Give your contact info to my PA. You resume immediately and you tender your resignation.”
I took a step toward him.
“I’m hiring you to take care of Nia. You’re to follow her everywhere except when she’s at home. Do not let her out of your sight. Make sure no harm comes to her. I’m entrusting the entirety of her safety to you. I believe you understand the gravity of your responsibilities?”
“Yes, sir,” he replied and headed off with my PA.
“Go home, you two,” I said to her glam team.
“But…”
“No buts,” I said firmly. They were trailing behind me like lost kittens, and it was making me feel uncomfortable. “I’ll have her reach out to you when she has fully rested.”
“Okay, sir,” they both replied, handing me a white mini purse and a phone before they left. “It’s hers.”
The bag was a bit wet. Thankfully, the contents weren’t soaked, and the phone screen was cracked.
I sighed deeply and looked around. I was all alone now. I spotted the doctor walking toward me.
“Mr. Kane,” he said.
“How is she?” I asked impatiently.
“She’s stable. She has a mild concussion. Thankfully she didn’t suffer any serious lung injury. She just needs rest, a lot of it over the next couple of days,” he explained.
“Thank you very much,” I shook his hand. “Can I see her now?”
“Of course you can. The nurse will take you.” I followed the nurse, holding Nia’s purse in my hand.
“This way, sir.”
She opened the door to reveal Nia lying down on the bed. She had already been changed into a hospital gown.
I walked up to her and stroked her face gently. Her makeup was smeared, and her hair was messy.
My assistant walked in with a change of clothes, toiletries, and other necessities for Nia.
“Have her wet clothes dry-cleaned, please,” I said, taking out her stuff from her purse and handing it to her together with her clothes. “Put additional security measures on her car. I want alerts if anyone tampers with it.”
“Get her a new phone. Have the security team install emergency location sharing.”
I grabbed her phone and saw 25 missed calls. A lot of her friends were calling to check on her. I saw 7 missed calls from her mom alone.
“What’s the media situation like?” I asked my assistant.
“The news has circulated everywhere,” she answered. “Pictures and videos also from different POVs. It’s out of our control.”

Chapter 69
I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration. Her phone rang again. It was her mom.
“Nia,” she said, crying as soon as I picked up the call.
“She’s asleep,” I answered calmly.
“It’s all your fault,” she yelled bitterly. “It’s because of you she wants to kill my daughter for me.”
The words landed harder than any punch. Because she was right.
